Gamecube Component cable can be modded to output VGA. PS2 has a VGA Cable. Other consoles can probably be modded to vga as well. As for UD. It´s a great shmup. But the DC version is already perfect in VGA 480p. No way that it can be improved on the ps3 or 360.

I'm sure this is ignorant, but realize I don't know much about video signals... but if I search for "PS3 VGA" on Amazon, a bunch of PS3 VGA cables come up. Is that not what you guys are talking about?

Also, why is VGA preferred over HDMI?

Yea, I have seen those cables on Amazon. But why buy that cable + the game so I can tate with one game on the PS3 when I can just buy the Xbox 360 version of the game that I already tate with 11 other games? :P

I read reviews on it because I am interested in one for my Wii to play Illvelo in tate. A lot of complaints about the picture quality.. Not sure I want to spend $25 or so on one.

Who prefers HDMI over VGA?
Perhaps someone who does not have hdmi inputs on their tv, but if you have hdmi inputs I can´t think of a reason why you would want vga.
VGA is better than component though

My 12 year old 19" CRT computer monitor doesn't have HDMI. :P I certainly prefer HDMI when available.

HDMI on my TV with the 360 and VGA on the CRT monitor. :D

I would say that VGA isn't preferred overall, just on CRTs. The reason being, you are getting a pure signal, so its going to look like what it did through an RGB screen in an arcade cab.

Sure, you can find HDCRTs, but those are going to have input lag that would not be present in a nice RGB monitor. So, for classic gaming (Or current gen gaming that should look classic), the easiest, and one of the best looking options, is to get a CRT that can take in either BNC RGB cables that you could convert to VGA, or an RGB VGA input.

Oh, and this game will not be region free on the 360. I am in the same boat as Erik though, I would rather have this TATE'able shooter on a system that has an easy VGA out and a dozen of my favorite TATE'able shooters. It is quite nice that people that don't have the option to play jp region 360 games can pick up the region free ps3 version though.

I do hope that the ps3 version doesn't force widescreen, making it impossible to fill the screen with a TATE'd image. Guwange had this when it was first released, and it was quite annoying. Luckily for us, they patched it.

I could be wrong, but even if consoles are modded for VGA, you wont get a true VGA signal, You still get a Component or S-vid image. Dreamcast and Xbox 360 was built with a VGA signal in mind.
Yes the PS2 does indeed have a VGA cable but its sole purpose is for development tools. PS2 games will not support it!

I do actually, and yes VGA is significantly better than component!

When it comes to comparing component to VGA, there is no competition.

Component uses 6 pins for video I believe. 3 color and 3 grounds. It is still compressing the image.

VGA uses 14 pins to transfer the image. It doesn't have to compress the image as far as I know, since its basically RGB.

HDMI is nice, and uses 19 pins to transfer data. The difference here is, you are not going to get hdmi out of anything but 360 and ps3.

Most consoles output in RGB as their true source, which means you can use scart cables, a scart to VGA converter, and hook up any old console to your monitor that is capable of outputting rgb with no mods. So, you actually can get a pure VGA signal out of older consoles like the SNES or Saturn, without console modding, you'll just need the correct cables.

Of course, some older consoles will need modding to output in RGB, but those consoles would also need modding to output in even s-video. If you are going to mod a system for increased video quality, RGB would still be the way to go.

Considering retro gaming, it really doesn't get any fancier than RGB/VGA
