Ummm, yeah....

Drastic improvements - loved the second level, made boss on first go.

87,300 - SNES

yeah, I'm hitting around 75-80k on level 2 now also, but the boss killed me a few times now. Level 3 is in sight, no doubt!

Got Axelay in the mail today. First level definitely threw me for a loop, was not expecting it to play/look so weird. I don't like how the ship handles in the vert levels at all. Second level got me liking the game a lot more right away though. It's too early to make this judgement really, but this is one of the less impressive Konami shmups I've played thus yet. I'm curious to see what else the game has in store though and will keep playing.

I love how different our opinions are, especially in a genre that most folk would say has been burned out for years. The Hori levels are definitely more attractive, and seem to have better BGM too. So far, its the bosses that are doing it for me.

Oh, and I set missles and fire to the same button. Makes it easier for my lazy ass.

I said that in my "Curator's Notes" post pages ago. Map shot AND missle buttons to same button. If your selected weapon is being fired, you will get tiny shots/missles to go along with them, and they are effective in spots to accompany your major weapon.

Sorry you missed that

Ok, mapping missile to main shot button helps a ton.

I feel like 2nd place is very attainable...until Chaz plays again that is.

Love the second board - so many neat things I haven't seen in many shmups. I've always been partial to horizontal games, just better at them.

3rd board seems a bit easier than the first for me - I still struggle getting through that speed up through rocks piece right before the spider boss.

Nice shot (and score)! That's right before Stage 3 miniboss.

Piece of advice on him.

- Get your Explosion Bomb ready
- Start firing as soon as he appears.
- It will then quickly dash off to one side of the screen. When he does, move UP, and then the opposite direction. Being above him wont kill you. Might need to watch the ships that start to spin around him at the top.
- Be sure to get back down after that. As soon as his left and right sides are shot off, switch back to Needle Cracker to stop the rotating ships around him and hopefully finish him off.

Believe it or not, those Stage 1 rocks gave me quite the fits too on my first play through. Just shoot them as quickly as possible. Macro Missile and its longer explosion time might help on those.

Glad you (and everyone else) are liking it, and keeping at it. :)

^That is actually at that mini-boss - I died by the last rotating enemy as he was exploding :/

I figured him out pretty quick actually.

Which bombs are you referring too? Still figuring things out...just discovered missiles earlier, didn't know I had bombs too!

Not getting killed by the rocks on stage 1, getting killed where you have to be between the air cliffs and it speeds up, first right, then left - I always seem to get through one, but not the other - minimum one guy at that spot - frustrating.

So is stage 4 horizontal as well then?

When you clear a stage, you will notice you get a new weapon to select when you return to that screen. After finishing stage 1, you get the Explosion Bomb (selectable in III-Bay section) and you can select that. I would keep the Macro Missile for Stage 1 and 2, and switch to Explosion Bomb on the select screen for Stage 3.

Here's what you get for clearing the stages:

After Stage 1 - Explosion Bomb (appears on III-Bay section)
After Stage 2 - Needle Cracker (appears on I-Pod section)
After Stage 3 - Cluster Bomb (appears on III-Bay section
After Stage 4 - Morning Star (appears on II-Side section)
After Stage 5 - Wind Laser (appears on I-Pod section)

Stages 1, 3, 5 are vertical, and stages 2, 4, 6 are horizontal.

Chaz, better fire the SNES back up.

Hit 3rd boss w/170K and 3 lives:

Boss was fairly easy, using deep-low corners as safe zones, just have to time your jump to center, shoot, back to corners.

Hit stage 4 (holy crap, lots of odd stuff coming at all angles, need lots of practice here - had no idea what was coming and where it was coming from.) Died out pretty quick, about 45 seconds into the stage.

I fucking hate Axelay. It's like playing with a broken controller. like when you turn on your nintendo 64 and the controller is lying on the floor upside down so the control stick is being pushed to the side. if i wanted my ship to return to the center of the screen i'd fucking move it there myself.

Anyone want to play Crisis Force with me, instead? :P
