Re: So what have you guys been watching lately?
It seems to have just recently had a surge of popularity. I read an article yesterday that said it just edged out American Idol in ratings last week. Give it up for the nerds and geeks! I don't really love using those words, but that is the target audience it seems. For a show like Big Bang Theory to edge out something mainstream like American Idol is very, very interesting.noiseredux wrote:yeah I had never paid Big Bang any mind until about 3 months ago. We're talking about Big Bang Theory and How I met Your Mother? I just started watching both of those a few weeks ago myself. I like both (Sheldon in particular is hilarious, maybe because I have an autistic sister whom I can see similarities in), but I wish they'd go a little lighter on the sexual humor. It'd be nice to be able to share these with my younger siblings.noiseredux wrote:yeah I had never paid Big Bang any mind until about 3 months ago. Been a total convert fan since. Re: So what have you guys been watching lately?
I just recently finished all 5 seasons of Breaking Bad. Watched 1-2 episodes most nights until I got caught up. Incredible show. Can't wait for Season 5 to start.
Now I'm watching Boardwalk Empire. The pilot episode was so-so but then I got into it and am on S0106 (Season 1, Episode 6). I love the opening music and pictures.
Once Boardwalk Empire is done, I'll probably watch Mad Men or The Wire.
Most of my TV watching is usually football on Sundays, Monday nights and baseball. Looking forward to watching the Patriots play the Giants.
I watched a few episodes of Big Bang Theory and just don't care for it. Ditto for any sci-fi shows like Star Trek or Dr Who. As a software engineer, I'm definitely in the minority here.

Go with The Wire. I gave up on Mad Men after the first season, though I hear it gets better. The Wire, on the other hand, is the most consistently brilliant show I've ever seen.gtmtnbiker wrote:I just recently finished all 5 seasons of Breaking Bad. I found it hard to take Steve Buscemi seriously as a badass mobster, so I didn't get more than one or two episodes into it before losing interest. It's got Michael K. Williams in it though, and I'll take him as a badass gangster no questions asked so I'll come back to it eventually.

I agree with you on Steve Buscemi but I was able to adjust after the first episode. To me, he seems someone is sharp. Heavy on the brains/people skills versus muscle.sabrage wrote: Go with The Wire. How would you compare The Wire with Breaking Bad? Which is better in your opinion?

Yeah, Sheldon is hilarious. The sex stuff I guess is there for ratings. This clip is great for members of this siteBoringSupreez wrote:We're talking about Big Bang Theory and How I met Your Mother? I loved seeing references like that in Chuck too
See. That's how you impress a hot, leggy, blond

The tone of the shows is entirely different, but they both do a great job of creating morally ambiguous characters and situations. The Wire is a very slow-burning and realistic show, while Breaking Bad is (and I know this is going to sound crazy!) more light-hearted and cartoony in its approach, though that's changed a lot in the most recent season. On the whole, I think I like Breaking Bad a little more, but we're talking about my two favorite shows in ages here so it's not I wouldn't recommend either.gtmtnbiker wrote:I agree with you on Steve Buscemi but I was able to adjust after the first episode. Also, go back and watch that scene where Walter spins his gun in the backyard again. I think you might have your mind blown

The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret

Has anyone else been watching this show? I know IFC has been having some success with Portlandia, but personally I much prefer Todd Margaret. It's got an absolutely diamond-studded cast: Stars David Cross and Will Arnett, Spike Jonze and Russ Tamblyn in supporting roles, and Jon Hamm showing up in a couple of episodes. I think it's absolutely hilarious that they actually got a world-class Snooker player in it too!
I think anyone's enjoyment on the show will be entirely based on how much they can tolerate David Cross's character. He's an absolute idiot, but the increasing absurdity of the things he does and says really keeps me in the show. It reminds me of Weeds during its first few seasons; that perfect storm of the absolute chaos the character's lives have devolved to. Todd Margaret just takes that 12 degrees further. I don't think I've laughed so hard at a show since... Well, fittingly, probably Arrested Development. If you have even a passing interest in David Cross's work, I highly recommend it. Definitely not one for the easily offended, though.

Re: So what have you guys been watching lately?
Finally caught up on The Office last night and In have to say it's been a series of ups and downs this season. Without Michael Scott (Steve Carell) the show's been a bit dead after turning to Jim, Pam and Dwight as the star characters. Since Andy's demeanor is so light and frankly out of place slapsticky there's no real balancing force to counteract their shenanigans when push comes to shove as Michael would do when it was time to actually be serious. This leaves the show with a more gag after gag type setup which while not a bad format doesn't really suit The Office's sarcasm of daily working life as much as it could say 30 Rock or Community.
