Neo Geo Pocket Colour Jap/Ntsc/Pal?

Post by andymol21 »

After buying a Bandai Wonderswan I've gotten myself into a bit of a retro handheld buying frenzy and I'm now eyeing a very nice Neo Geo Pocket Colour that I've seen advertised. Problem is it's a Japanese version. I know that the console is Region Free (Thank you RetroGaming 101) but will the Japanese console display my Ntsc/Pal games in Japanese? Don't want to spend this much money on a console I can't understand!

Don't worry--the NGPC region won't change the language of the game. I have an Ntsc and Japanese version and can attest to this. Enjoy the NGPC by the way; it's a great system.

Well I took the plunge. Bought a Neo Geo Pocket Colour used for 3,222 Yen shipped to Paris from Japan. I also got Puzzle Linker 2 from a seller in the UK for £4.49 shipped. I'm taking a trip to America this summer so I need something to entertain myself on the flight. Between this, my Wonderswan, my GBC and my DS with all its emulators I should be set for the flight. Oh and my iPod :) Couple of podcasts should see me through nicely. I'm almost looking forward to a 10 hour flight now!

Are the US NGPC's region free? If so I may pick one up, my game store has one for 30 bucks. I remember when they came out, I was working at a video game/music/movie/book store place and they had a bundle with 4 games for like 60 bucks. Plus i got an employee discount....should just got it then.

I loved my NeoGeoPocketColor (especially for Turf Masters, what a beautiful game) but I sold it as soon as I got HotShots golf for PSP.

Yep, they're all region free as far as I know.

I saw that you sold a lot of your collection recently. Do you actually have any retro consoles left? Do you play more modern or retro games nowadays?

My NGPC just came in the mail today. It's a Japanese unit. Does anyone know how to change the region to English? I can't read Japanese so I'm not sure which selections to enable. Doing a quick google search, I'm surprised to not find an FAQ but I'll keep searching.

EDIT: I kept searching and searching but couldn't find any place where someone asked/answered the question.

Anyway, I figured it out myself. Here's how you do it in case some person has this issue in the future.

With no cartridge in the system, turn the unit on (need to hold down the button for a second or two). It'll bring up the Pocket Menu which is in Japanese. There are 5 selections on the screen. Choose the single selection in the third row. Select it and press A. The first question will be "Choose your language" which will be in Japanese but you'll see English or Japanese options. Choose English.

Yeah, I think him and kingdomhd are the only longtime members on this forum that don't regularly play retro games.
