Re: Let's Name the Top 100 Video game female characters
My cousin had a demo of this game back in the day. This post really makes me want to seek out a way to play the full version some day. I remember it being effectively creepy, and this description definitely solidifies that hunch.J T wrote:31. Mother- Sanitarium
Mother, from the game Sanitarium, was an interesting character. She was a giant tree woman that was kidnapping human children, killing their parents, and raising them as her own while trying to mutate the children into plants instead of the meat sacks that they are.

Re: Let's Name the Top 100 Video game girls
Your point? It's possible to appreciate a female game character in spite of the artist's blatant pandering to the lowest common denominator. It's not like there are oodles and oodles of realistically designed video game heroines out there to choose from, sadly. Also, it's not like we'd have much more luck avoiding unrealistic depictions of men if/when we did the male version of this list.dsheinem wrote:Stereotype That's Physically Impossible and/or Unattainable for Gamers in Real Life - Almost Every "Video Game Girl" That Will be Listed in This Thread

Lenneth Valkyrie from Valkyrie Profile. She's definitely my favorite female game character.

She's gorgeous, obviously, but she's also a Norse goddess. She has time for girly things like braiding her hair, and...having feelings...but she's also someone who absolutely shouldn't be trifled with. She's a goddess of fate who chooses the souls of slain warriors to train them to fight in Ragnarok. She's firm in her convictions, she's terrifying in battle, and she speaks in poetry.
"Defiler of souls! Your sins lay heavy upon you!"

I'll just refer you here, as I don't want to (continue to) crap all over this thread. Suffice to say I feel that threads like this perpetuate a negative stereotype of male gamers as a bunch of horndogs that objectify and ogle those most physically/emotionally exaggerated and sexualized female characters, and that these practices alienate women from or marginalize them within our hobby. So no, I don't think the creation of threads like this are harmless "fun," I think they are contradictory to the kind of welcoming and inclusive community that I think gaming culture should be.Flake wrote:Your point? Re: Let's Name the Top 100 Video game girls
I think the characters, male and female, in both film and games are portrayed as larger than life. They tend to exaggerate traits that society finds appealing, dsheinem wrote:I'll just refer you here, as I don't want to (continue to) crap all over this thread.
