Being honest here, even though the Mega Drive was my first console, I think I only appreciate the awesomeness of the Neo Geo because of my PlayStation (that I got in 1996).
When I was younger, I used to go to the arcades and play The King of Fighters (it was always big in South America) and then got home to read a magazine and find out how the newest port of the series was faring on the PlayStation.
And it normally would go like "Well, 98% of the frames were cut because of the pitiful amount of RAM the PS has, and load times are dreadful." So, I could see why the Neo Geo was a big deal.
If I had grown up with a Dreamcast or PS2, I probably wouldn't give much value to these games and wouldn't understand what the fuss is about arcade accuracy. It's just what people came to expect, that arcade games should be perfect at home. We grew up at a time when it wasn't really the case at all.

I can see why others would enjoy the Neo-Geo, but it's definitely not something on my to-get list.

I was playing Street Fighter II on DOS when I was 6-7 years old (1992). That's the earliest gaming I can remember. I know I used to play Intellivision games and Wolfenstein a lot in my early years as well. I don't think got a DMG until '92/'93 and I don't think I got SNES until late in the cycle which was like '93/'94. Although, all those years blend together so I might be off.
Don't pay much attention to those brogamers. I'm glad they want nothing to do with retro gaming. Otherwise the Racketboy community wouldn't be even half as good as it is today.

Yeah we'd be flooded with them and their idiot comments.
Its similar to films and they way they evolved to have sound, tinted washes, and then full colour. I know plenty film lovers who won't watch anything in monochrome

Disliking black and white movies is a far cry from retro vs modern arguments in the gaming world.

I'd say it's dumber to dislike retro games than it is to dislike B&W movies. There are plenty of good things in B&W, but so much of it has aged poorly. I have a hard time staying interested in most dramas made before 1970. Comedy (especially physical comedy) is timeless, however.o.pwuaioc wrote:How so?ryanofcali wrote:Disliking black and white movies is a far cry from retro vs modern arguments in the gaming world.

It's equally as dumb. You just haven't gotten into the right movies yet. Or haven't tried. But this really does sound just like a modern gamer dismissing retro games. I guess we can't all be perfect.BoringSupreez wrote:I'd say it's dumber to dislike retro games than it is to dislike B&W movies. Except that black and white is a flat out hindrance. Unless you're trying to do something well beyond your console's limits (Star Fox, Space Channel 5 GBA, etc), your game can age much better than a movie.o.pwuaioc wrote:It's equally as dumb. Black and white is about as much of a hindrance as 2D is to games.GameMasterGuy wrote:Except that black and white is a flat out hindrance.
