The opening of Final Fantasy VI. Not a "level" in the traditional sense, but marching a giant mech death machine through the Narshe mines is an amazing way to start the game.
Plus, it's nice to play an old-school RPG where you don't spend the first hour walking in circles around the hero's hometown killing slimes.

I really agree with that, and I only started playing that game last year. I was rapt the entire time. And the music! Chills.
Sonic Adventure 2 I remember being like :O as well as the first one.
Funny you mention these... as I read this thread I keep thinking about how Sonic Adventure 2's final boss is one of my favorite boss fights of all time, even though the rest of the game tries my patience.

And the Sonic Adventure 2 boss? I thought that was pretty lame compared to fighting chaos in SA1. Not as lame as the Sonic Generations final boss though.
They really haven't done it right since doomsday in S&K.

Really? I thought it was more epic. Asteroid....well...space colony, going to destroy the earth (Gundam style) and you have to stop it. Ok maybe the monster didn't have an epic design as Chaos, and you didn't fight him any earlier in the game (thus no build up to the fight) but overall I think it was cooler.
Still haven't finished Sonic Gens though.
