Right, that was for me the best ship to use. Remember to press all 3 buttons when selecting the Wild Snail -- it will become the Golden Bat and you get a little more speed and a smaller hitbox.ZenErik wrote:Wow. i had no idea. Thanks for the tip! I also saw on the shmups forum that the ship I was using doesn't get many high scores. Most of the high scores there used wild snailExedExes wrote:The 3rd button enables a direction change to the Options. Who wants to sell me a copy on Saturn for $15? Anyone? $120 you say? Blegh.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

Re: BATTLE GAREGGA - Hi-scores
For scoring, I prefer Gain, as his bomb milks more from the birds. Snail is nice for surviving though, since the flamethrower bomb cancels bullets in front of you.
Moar tips!!: There are special option formations that you can get by missing 5 of a certain item, and then picking up an option.
Example: I uncover six.bomb frags on stage 1. I grab one, resetting the amount Ibe missed to zero, and then let 5 pass before grabbing an option (must miss exactly 5) This will give you homing options.
You can do this with each item. If you change your option formation while you have a special powerup, you will lose it.
Even moar tips!!!?: As you know, there is no tap shot, when you hold you autofire at I believe 10 shots a second. If you tap faster than this for at least (5?) Seconds, and then hold, it will set the shot frequency however fast you were tapping, up to 30? a second.
As for changing options, I do this very little starting out. It is distracting, and only really useful to take apart spots of bosses that are hard to hit, like the front propellers on the st1 boss.
Im glad people are getting into this.
EDIT: Also, each ship can be picked with A, B, C, or all 3. A is normal, B will make the ship faster, and C will give you a smaller hitbox (applies to bullets AND items, so medal chaining is harder with a small hitbox). Picking with all 3 will give you both speed and small hitbox. You can also let the timer run out to get a different ship.

I think this is one of the few games that requires at least 19 inches to be able to see what is going on properly. Before I played it in TATE, I never got off stage 2.ZenErik wrote:Thanks for the tips. I will try them next time i play. And this time i will play with the monitor in tate. Oh, and in the options, you don't want to have small hitbox or special option on. Small hitbox will make you always have a small hitbox, no matter what you pick. Special options on will start you out with a special powerup, differing depending on the ship. You can still get special options and pick small hitbox with these options off.
Re: BATTLE GAREGGA - Hi-scores
I am playing via MAME so I do not have any of those options. Already told rancor that I would be sticking with MAME for now.
Does your monitor have inputs for the Saturn? Mine is an actual computer monitor and only has VGA. I would need a converter box to hook up s-video for the Saturn. So that is still hooked up to my big LCD.

Re: BATTLE GAREGGA - Hi-scores
The monitor I am using has S-video, RGBHV, and VGA, but its an old NEC 35" monitor, seems to have been some kind of professional display monitor.
You should be able to get a converter that can take either Scart or component and put it through VGA.

Re: BATTLE GAREGGA - Hi-scores
Yea. Just not sure it is worth it since most Saturn shmups I can get on MAME. And 35", wow! Mine is tiny in comparison. But I like that mine is only 50 pounds. I can tate or un-tate it myself without feeling like I'm going to break my back or the monitor. The 1600 x 1200 max resolution is nice too. Some doujin shmups support that resolution.dunpeal2064 wrote:The monitor I am using has S-video, RGBHV, and VGA, but its an old NEC 35" monitor, seems to have been some kind of professional display monitor.

Re: BATTLE GAREGGA - Hi-scores
Yeah, I find myself using MAME because I can hook it straight to VGA, and it looks great. There is no reason to spend $100 getting converters to output Component VGA with your saturn, as it still won't look as good, and Battle Garegga is one of the few that is actually worth it. I will never play Donpachi or Dodonpachi on my saturn again, aside to compare differences (and maybe to hear that sweet remix for stage 0 DDP) I will say, its nice that the saturn can play the soundtracks from those games in nice quality. I think I use it for that more now than actually playing the games.
Yeah, there is no TATE'ing this monitor, but the vertical picture is about 22", so I'm ok with it like that. The thing weighs 228lbs, but it also auto syncs as low as 15khz, and since its a CRT, and not an HDCRT, it gets the scanelines without the input delay. Its the best TV I could have asked for, and someone over on shmups dropped it off at my door for free. I was like a little kid, running around with a boner and not knowing what to do with it.
