Rival Schools Price and Rarity

Post by Crabmaster2000 »

Hey guys,
While going to one of my local pawn shops I have seen this game Rival Schools there. Its been there for months. I tried to check what its worth on Ebay and see how rare it is but all I seem to be able to find is Rival Schools: United by Fate. It looks like its in great condition and I would have grabbed it in a sec if they owner was selling it for $5 like most of his ps1 games. He has this one labelled at $15. Just wondering if its worth the price tag in either monetary value or funness. Thanks guys.

It sells for about $20-$60 on eBay depending on condition.
It's pretty good, but the Dreamcast sequel (which goes by Project Justice in the US) is more enjoyable IMO. (although that sells for a bit more)

Assuming its in good condition, it's a good buy based on value.
However, to be honest, you could get more fun for your money elsewhere.

I havnt checked the discs or manual to see what kind of shape they are in but if the outer box is any indication it should be in pretty decent shape. Is it rare enough to be used as a trading tool for other games or is it just one of those semi-rare games without to much demand?

I think it's more demand than rarity.

I remember it being pretty enjoyable from the small time I spent with it. If they're only charging $15, I'd definitely give it a look.

Thats weird, I found this too in a junk store in Greenpoint, Brooklyn not 3 weeks ago. I paid about $3 for it. Its opened but not a single scratch on either of the discs and the manual and case were included and in good shape as well.

Nice to hear its in demand. :)

I too prefer Project Justice, but it is definetely in demand and I've seen it go for some pretty decent prices on eBay. I'd picked it up if it's relatively inexpensive. (Like $3 that was a steal.)

Haha! Bought this for $20 I think, back in the day at WalMart (ew). I really love this game. The non-arcade disk (Disc 2?) was awesome, because it had all these crazy minigames, palette swap characters, and stuff. The story mode is pretty weird too. I remember this being a great fighting game to play with friends, because of the wacky characters and special moves. Pretty novice friendly too- just mashing buttons can leave you with decent results, so your friends arent always ashamed to play if they arent that great- but the game has enough depth for a fighters fan to succeed.

If you dig fighters, and those by Capcom in particular, I say go for it. Even if you don't like it, or after your play through is over, just swap it or ebay it.

Thanks for the info guys. Ill see if I can talk him down from $15 bucks. If I can get it for $10 or less ill probably pick it up but ill just leave it there if hes not willing to budge.

I have to disagree on Project Justice. The original Rival Schools: United by Fate had pushed 3-D conbat to another level, for the first time. It was released at the time where 3-D fighters were tossed out, some with mild improvements where as others evolving standards in 3-D Fighters. With Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Tobal 1, breaking the privative mold of simplistic polygon fighters at the time, Rival School ALSO contributed to the genre.

Players for the first time were treated to a power-house of combos plus the original 2-D fighting gameplay (featured in SF series) on top of that. I remember playing the Arcade numerous of times, but the port for Playstation also came with a bonus disk that featured an in-depth training mode, tournament modes, as well as a four-player mode that allows the non-fighting member of your team to control when the team-up attacks take place. Also had mini games included. Capcom's effort was burning the jewel case, by even adding TONS of original artwork as loading screens.

The original also had a spin-off of the RS:UBF in Japan that was released. Project Justice for Sega Dreamcast does have more polished graphics, and if you own the JPN version you are treated to a board game. But I feel RS:UBF deserves to stand as a mildstone for fighters ahead, including PJ.

On the price. Yes that is a good deal.
