Funny you would bring up LDs. I am working on finishing up a prototype right now for a lasr disk add on drive that will attach to the expansion port of the Sega Dreamcast. It will be a motor-operated, trayless front loading drive that boots from software on a GD-rom disk that I have developed for the DC... with the help of a few well-known ex Sega developers. (they have requested to remain unnamed)
The name of the expansion project is Lasrcast. I have already met with some of the industries top developers. Although most have requested to remain unannounced at this point, I will say that Capcom has signed a contract to develop and release a Street Fighter 4 port for the Lasrcast! Although the Lasrcast port will be trimmed down graphically, but the difference should be minimal. With the Lasrcast's addition of ram and processing power to the DC's existing hardware, it will be as powerful as the Naomi 2 arcade board.
After the success of this project, I will be releasing the VHS drive addon commercially, under the name Tapecast!
Dreamcast Movies/DVD/VCD/Video/.....VHS?
Can't wait! Finally a way to experience the magic of Laserdisks on the Dreamcast!nateup2 wrote: The name of the expansion project is Lasrcast.
I would imagine that the Dreamcast will sit right on top of the Larcast just like the Sega CD model 1?
So sweet.
Now if we can just incorporate a 5¼ floppy drive...
Yeah, wouldn't it be sweet to load DC games with floppies? The stack of floppies needed to play Shenmue in full would probably reach the moon.Caleb wrote:Can't wait! Finally a way to experience the magic of Laserdisks on the Dreamcast!nateup2 wrote: The name of the expansion project is Lasrcast.

This is as crazy as my S2 project and I respect you for it. The world needs more people like you!nateup2 wrote:Funny you would bring up LDs. Older. Not wiser.
I wasn't able to get the 3.5s working to run actual game data, but I was able to mod a floppy drive to emulate the VMUs, via the GD boot disk.Zer wrote:Yeah, wouldn't it be sweet to load DC games with floppies? You can even put the 3.5s in a pc/laptop and access the data and minigames through Windows.
I will be releasing the DC/Tapecast/Lasrcast/Diskette VMU combo as DCFULL in fall of 08. It will retail somewhere around a moddest $300 in order to compete with Sony and Microsoft.

Laserdisks fade =\. Like in about 10 uses the picture is barely there.Funk, E wrote:I still kinda want to know what Ryan meant about laserdiscs before.
EDIT:
This thing sounds awesomesauce, nate. I wonder if you'll be able to access old analog RCA Videodiscs, or maybe wax cylinders as well?
