I must have the worst copy of the game ever, I've had the game lock up, dialog muted, and other issues. My blockbuster copy has a pretty nasty scratch running in the same circular direction of the cd, and some nasty finger smudges too.
On the plus side, I'm getting through the game, just have to restart my 360 every once in a while when crazy shit happens. I should get the disc resurfaced really. I like the story so far, reading the diaries really fleshes it out. I really love using the camera and the damage bonuses you get from that. I was getting annoyed by how week I was at the beginning of the game. My first two or three big daddy encounters really pissed me off, but now with the upgrades I've gotten I feel like the game is opening up a bit and big daddies are getting a bit less intimidating. I like the rpg elements in this game. That powers are still fun to use too
What I dislike though is that hacking is mostly useless as the robots and turrets haven't helped me much. Also, the game is way too health pack reliant. Bioshock has one of the mostly ridiculously small lifebars I've ever seen in a game. It's like you can die is someone sneezes on you, at least until you get an upgrade or two. They compensated by giving you TONS of health items. This however, makes the game seem a bit too easy, as you can just get shot up and keep healing since you actually carry health items around with you. It's only when you fight your first two or three big daddies do you feel challenged and then it's like overkill as they can make you go through the health packs pretty quick. The game's difficulty level could have used some tweaking
Still, the game is rather engrossing. I'm curious about what new powers and upgrades I'll get, I want to see how the story plays out and I just love all the twisted and unusual imagery and atmosphere the game has. I feel like Bioshock doesn't complete fill its potential and maybe was a bit overhyped but it's not a game I am regretting trying out and I can't wait to get back to it today
Bioshock is no RPG of course
Once you are powered up enough, stuff won't hurt you quite as badly. This is not a game to play on easy if you want a challenge (what are you playing it on?).
Plus the respawn points are ridiculously generous. In Zero Punctuation, it was mused that one could beat a Big Daddy to death with a wrench. Towards the end of the game, my wrench was leveled up with all the plasmids I could find for it and I beat one to death, only dying three times myself. Took three minutes, tops. Granted, that was on easy...

I just finished it today. Kind of disappointed. The ending is really, really short and really, really disappointing. I got what I assume was the good ending. For a long game like this(assuming you take the time to explore), I expect a better ending. In retrospect, the game's story is not very good. There's one big plot twist that happens maybe three fourths into the game. After that, nothing really interesting happens and the ending doesn't deliver at all. The plot twist actually kind of pissed me off actually, but I won't spoil anything
Bioshock could have been a shorter game. I mean the game is a bit longer than it needs to be, especially when you're killing the same enemies over and over and over again. There's not that much variety. Imagine Resident Evil with only zombies and that's basically what you got here. You just keep fighting mutated humans throughout the entire game. Big Daddies are the only other enemy type you'll find and you get sick of fighting those cheap, overpowered bastards quickly. Plus, the game has very few boss fights, and none of them are memorable.
You get a decent number of powers, but some of them are useless. The game would have benefited from a few more powers(and some more enemy variety). Hacking things is fun and sometimes it's great to have turrets and security systems working for you, but oftentimes hacking other items is annoying as the game gets really cheap about it sometimes. Putting tons of obstacles that make it impossible to successfully hack some things unless you're lucky or have auto-hack items. The hacking mini-game itself gets old very quickly as you'll be doing it like a billion times throughout the game. Bioshock is very, very repetitive.
Gameplay is a little unpolished too. Occasionally, the powers and weapons don't work properly. A steel bolt to a frozen enemy will kill it most times, but sometimes it just won't. A few mines can kill a big daddy instantly, and other times it won't. The enemy respawns are aggravating as well. Not something I've encountered in other shooters I've played where you kill some enemies, and that's it, they stay dead.
I'm also pissed about the Historian achievement. You need to find 122 diaries. That's a fricking lot of diaries and requires a lot of exploration, only to discover that you can't get the achievement because you missed one of two diaries at the beginning of the game that are ONE TIME ONLY. That's bullshit.
Bioshock is fun initially. You have fun messing around with the powers and hacking turrets/security systems. Plus, the stealth tonic is very cool. Plus, you get a sense that the story is really going somewhere, but the game never really delivers. The powers and hacking lose their novelty very early, and then the game just settles into repetition, and the story is just...Meh. There's unfulfilled potential in this game. and with all the upgrading you do in this game, no new game plus feature? Lame. Game of the year material it is not. Definitely overhyped a bit.
