Colorblindness and video games

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I don't actually have any of these defficiencies, but knowing about them makes me appreciate places like AbleGamers.com. They review games based on their accessibility and colorblindness is one of the criteria.

It's actually a little sad to see how a few changes would help a lot of people play games and how developers generally are oblivious to that.

I'm fairly sure I'm not colorblind but I have difficulty seeing yellow text on a white background.

I e-mailed Sivak about the color issue, and he wrote me back! What a class act!

Anyway, he said that this was an oversight during development and that the there will not be be a similar situation in Battle Kid 2. This is great news!

HA! Finally beat her! I'm really f'ing thrilled!

I kind of cheated, though, and used a turbo controller-- the NES Max. I think it let me get her after surviving only three attack cycles. Given that I couldn't uniquely identify ANY of the attacks via color, I'm not going to feel too bad about it. I am going to switch back to my standard controller, though.

Star Tropics II: Zoda's Revenge:

This is another really annoying one that comes late in the game. I think somewhere in level 7 or 8 there are some rooms full of ghosts, and one is a slightly different color and is the only one you can hit. I got through these without too much trouble.

However, it comes up again in the VERY LAST BOSS BATTLE OF THE GAME!! Darn it!

In the very last boss battle, there are three stages. The first stage is just five little tentacled balls moving around and shooting at you. Apparently, four are blue and one is purple, and the purple one is the only one you can hit.

Stages two and three of the battle were actually much easier for me, since they did not have a color-differentiation element. I had to play through the level (an eight-boss rush) a bunch of times until I got lucky on stage one of the final battle and the "purple" tentacle thing separated itself from the others so I didn't get them confused.

I only know there is supposed to be color differentiation from seeing printed guides for the battle.

I have a friend who has trouble with green and red I think, he couldn't see the "dots" that marked people in Bad Company 2. That's a bit crucial.

BF3 has an option to help remedy this.

Seriously though, all puzzle games in general must just be impossible for color blind people, unless the block have unique icons, and even then.
