How much would a modded ps2/saturn be worth?

Post by IDreamInSound »

Pardon my ignorance, I haven't been following the gaming market for the last 2 years or so. I have a modded NTSC-J Slim PS2 and a modded model 2 NTSC Saturn. What do you folks consider the current value of the systems? I might be selling them soon.

I don't know jack about prices, but I thought I might as well announce my interest for that PS2. Yo know, just putting that out there.

After I get the prices down on some items I'm going to make a thread on the buy/sell/trade forum. I'll go ahead and pm you a pic. I'm still trying to formulate a price but you are welcome to throw me an offer.

No cosmetic modding on the systems, just modchips.

The modded PS2 has the Matrix Infinity v.1.93 modchip.

The modded Saturn has the one sold on the racketboy store.

Well a member here charges about $70 (plus the cost of the chip) to install a PS2 mod chip. So I would assume the going price for a PS2 (in the condition you have it) plus $70 plus the cost of the chip, but I don't think that formula would be right for a premodified console, I would think a little less. The reason being is that the price of the install would be a little higher if offered as a service, a little lower if you're selling a console with the chip already installed. Using the above formula, that would make a chipped PS2 slim roughly $150 give or take, and I don't know if people would be willing to pay that much for it. Though I could be wrong, I've never been in the market for a premodified console before.

The Saturn mod chip isn't nearly as difficult to install as the PS2 chip. In fact, it's quite easy to install. That being said, there's still some people that would rather buy one with a chip already installed then to try and install a chip themselves. I quickly searched eBay completed listings, it looks like a model 2 Saturn with one or two controllers, AV and power chords sells for about $40 give or take. $40 for the console plus the cost of the chip is about $80. I'm not sure if people would be willing to pay more than that, but again, I've never been in the marked for premodified systems before.

Thanks a lot for the help Ziggy, your setup for calculating the prices seems fair and I'll probably use it. The only other factor that's bugging me is the PS2 being NTSC-J region. Not sure if that would affect the pricing of a premodded console. Looking at eBay, unmodded Japanese ps2's seem to be worth a little more than American (considering I live in the US).

The chip in the PS2 makes it region free, correct? I would just consider it an NTSC-U console for that reason (for price concerns). Since it's chipped, there's no benefit of it being NTSC-U or J that I know of. Unless it's a limited edition version that is a different color or something.

Yes, that makes sense. Thanks again, I'll probably be putting up a sale thread tonight.
