Info on other good (and cheap) PSP racers would be cool too. Ridge Racer and Outrun 2006 look good.

WipEout - Pure or Pulse?
I need to scratch my racing itch, and it's been a while. I'm a big PSP fan but I don't have either of these yet. I'll probably just get one for now, so which is the better game? I googled it but all I got was "PULES HAZ BETTR GRAFX MAN." Not much help

I have Pulse on PS2 and for some reason I could never figure out how to get it to save. From what I played of the arcade mode it looked pretty.
That's my helpful opinion for the day.

I have both and I like them.
They are both cheap enough that it doesnt hurt your wallet to own both.
Pure was one of the first games that I have for my PSP.
get them both.

Pulse has a better track selection and feels a bit less draggy in the controls.
Older. Not wiser.

Yes! And custom soundtracks only sweeten the deal!

can't tell you about Wipeout myself. But I can tell you that OutRun 2006 is great. I haven't played the Ridge Racer yet, but I've heard it's actually one of the best of the series (and a bit of a Best Of kind of thing). And you didn't mention it, but I enjoyed ModNation Racers on PSP quite a bit a well.

Pure actually has an incredible ship and track selection if you take into account the free DLC that was released for it. Of course, the problem these days is finding and installing that DLC. It was removed from SL's servers long ago. The game has a very floaty feel, even for Wipeout standards. It doesn't feel like WO/XL/W3, but it feels better than Fusion. It's as if they said, "fuck it, Fusion's physics didn't work so let's go back to the old style" and exaggerated the effect x10. You can definitely get used to it and the game is very playable, but it still feels like your ship is about two lengths too long and the point you are steering is actually an invisible ship's length in front of you. While it has nothing to do with gameplay, the menus in Pure are some of the best I have seen in a video game.
Pulse's physics are a mix between Wipeout HD (which wasn't out yet) and F Zero. Ship control feels more direct and the tracks are designed to take advantage of the new physics model. Pure may have had more tracks (when considering DLC), but Pulse's are of much higher quality. The game is faster and more polished. The graphics are considerably better and the soundtrack is a step above Pure. Of course, you can create your own custom soundtrack using an MP3 folder on your PSP memory stick. Pulse also allows for online infrastructure play while Pure only allowed play over ad-hoc. One of the biggest complaints about Pulse was the inclusion of the "mag strips" which hold a ship to the track during loops and other bumpy sections of track. These "mag strips", combined with more liberally placed walls to keep you from going off the track, remove a lot of possible short cuts and track jumps. Even then, it's still an outstanding game and one of the best racing games on the PSP.
I would give Pulse a nudge above Pure.
If you are looking for a racing game other than Wipeout on the PSP, I recommend Burnout Dominator.

If anyone is looking for the Wipeout Pure DLC, Joystiq got yo back.
Looks like they're still on the official site too, but Joystiq has them all in a single .zip which is nice.
