Do any of you own an AES?

Post by Boaby Kenobi »

The Neo Geo AES is my most sought after console. In June when its my birthday I'll be buying one off ebay. I love 2D fighters so that's why I'm prepared to spend a few hundred pounds on a console from years ago.
Does anyone own one on this forum? I'd be interested to know where you got it from and how much you paid for it and also what games you have for it.

I'd get an MVS and supergun for the same price. Or make your own supergun with a psu and jamma 56pin harness and save a tonne of money. The games are stupidly cheap for MVS and they're exactly the same. (same chips different cartidges for the systems).

Although nothing is sexier than an AES.

So I guess i'm not helping much hehe!

I'm with you I'd love to have a neo geo system (I've had two NGPCs) the aes is very cool especially if modded but the games are damn pricey. Its very much a collectors system due to rarity, cool carts and pricing. For gamers a CD neo is far cheaper or if you've got the space an MVS would actually be cheaper in the long run (and the coolest imo) I will own a neo cab one day I swear!

on ebay i paid 180 shipped for a japanese aes in box with all of the manuals and everything, one controller three games ss1 ss2 ffs.

the japanese model is cheaper, and the European (PAL) models play games approximately 17% slower

This is true. With a universal bios you're sorted.

If you're going to get an AES, get a Japanese one. Otherwise i'd heavily point you in the direction of either consolising an MVS or getting a supergun. The games for the MVS are exactly the same as the AES counterparts. There is literally 0 difference. With a universal bios you can force an AES to run in arcade mode and the games play exactly as they would on an MVS and vice versa. The MVS games are dirt cheap compared to AES versions. The only difference would be that the cartridges just have a plain black and white label with the name of the game on it. Very rarely you will find them with the proper arcade panel inserts on ebay etc, but these go for quite a bit more money. If you're bothered about presentation you can always get some shockboxes and print your own inserts. Fan made covers are freely available for every game on the internet.

The only thing I have to say is that if you are getting an MVS it's so much better if you buy/build your own cab, if you have the space. That way you can say you have a real arcade machine and not just some crappy MAME knockoff. (plus you can stick a pc motherboard in the cabinet and get a VGA graphics AGP/PCI-E card and run it straight into your arcade monitor so you've got the best of both worlds then)

I've had several AES consoles, a couple of MVS machines, and even a MAMECab. Every time I sell it to get "something else" I *always* regret it. To decide which way to go (AES or MVS) you have to take a look at yourself and see WHY you're getting one.

Do you just want to PLAY King of Fighters 98 with your friends and a few beers? Or, do you want your friends to come over and comment on how all of your NeoGeo games look so sexy on your shelf?

If you just want to jam on a game, get an MVS. As previously mentioned, it's wicked cheaper, most games range from the $10 to $75 range (except for some really rare or really new games). But with MVS games, you get a black cartridge with a lable that has "GameName" on it, and the MVS boards are just PCBs, and range in size depending on how many slots you get. With an MVS you either need a JAMMA cabinet, or a SuperGun like the MAS SuperNova or you can build your own pretty cheaply. The purpose of MVS is playing games - TO PLAY GAMES.

The AES on the other hand is way prettier (we're not talking graphics here), is a better conversation piece, and the games are much more expensive, and can get EXTREMELY expensive if they are rare. Metal Slug has sold for over $1000 on ebay, and Kizuna Encounter - there are only 2 known HomeCart copies in existence and have sold for about $25,000. That's not a typo. Twenty five thousand. The AES market is saturated with what I like to call douchebags. Everyone else refers to them as 'collectors'. And because of these douchebags, prices get inflated beyond what they should be. Seriously, $25k for an AES cart that costs $20 on MVS? There are games you can get on the cheap if you find them at the right time. I got King of Fighers 95 and 98 complete and mint for $150 once on ebay. Games like Blue's Journey will go easy for $20/$50, but like I said, other games can get crazy expensive.

Sorry for the crazy amount of typing, but it boils down to what you want it for. Just to play, get an MVS. To show people that 'you have a NeoGeo', get an AES. Also, don't even get me started on 'MVS collectors', what with their 'complete MVS kits' and so on.

To me, MVS is the easy decision... to play or to show off. Neither I, nor any of my friends could afford or had even ever seen an AES in real life during its hey-day. To us, the MVS cabinet was the only NEO GEO we knew. I would still prefer it for value and looks.

Them AESs do look pretty sexy though!
