how does the picture fare post mod? i was interested in doing this to 1 or 2 handhelds but i was worried it would wash out the colors and make the picture too bright.

It is a little more washed out than before, but not unplayable or anything, in fact, it makes it more playable simply because you can see whats going on now. I plan on going back in to make a couple changes though. First the guide said to use a 47 ohm resistor, but the screen is not as bright as it could be, so I am going to put a lower resistance one in. Second, if you put a piece of anti-glare film over the lcd it will take care of the "optimum viewing angle" I mentioned in the first post.

Have you considered adding an on/off switch for the light?

With both of the ones I did, it was basically unplayable and hurt my eyes. Though I'm sure some antiglare screen protection would've helped.

Im not sure what could have gone wrong with yours, but it in no way hurts my eyes, nor does it make it unplayable. Being able the see the screen in all light makes it even more enjoyable to play.

I just used good GBA SP frontlights. Did you use an afterburner or something? Both of mine came out terrible, blue, and washed out. Looking at your pics it doesn't seem yours faired any better. :?

Maybe I just expected too much.

I used the SP front light, the pics are not the best example of how it looks, it was the best my phone could capture though. Once I change the resistor and place the film on I will try to get a better picture of it.

So I did a little experimenting tonight with resistors to get the brightness up a bit. I originally did the mod with a 47 ohm resistor as per the guide I read. I later read online that you can use down to a 20 ohm and be ok. So I went to radio shack and picked up a pack of 22 ohm, and pack of 33 ohm. I first soldered in the 22 and the screen was noticeably brighter, but much more washed out than before. I soldered in the 33 and I think that is the magic number, as the screen was not as washed out, but had a nice brightness to it.

One weird thing I noticed in my testing, and a google search didnt turn up any info, was that with the 22 ohm resistor after about 5 minutes of playing the batteries were "sweating" they had a layer of condensation covering the exposed side (I didnt have a battery cover on). I didnt notice this with the 33 ohm, not sure if its directly related but im sure it wasnt from my hand, as sonic isnt that intense!
