NGPC front light mod success!

Post by jay_red »

So I got an NGPC about a week ago and could not stand the screen being so hard to see, and found out about people using the front light from a Game Boy Advance SP model AGS-001. It seemed like a pretty straight forward mod so I gathered the parts to make it happen. I followed this guide:
http://www.jamma-nation-x.com/jammax/ngpcdiy.html

I picked up a broken SP off ebay for $12 shipped, and got the resistor and wire from radio shack for $6. Everything else I already had around the house. It took me about 2 hours to complete and I was surprised when it turned on and worked the first try!

You can play it in pitch black, the picture makes it look weird, there are no dark spots like that, and the light is much more even. It does seem to have a bit of a "optimum viewing angle though"

And even in low light it is good:

Its a huge improvement over how it originally was, and I plan on doing the same mod to an original GBA once I find a nice clean white model.

Pretty schnazzy there jay_red!
Any idea what kind of hit the battery life takes with it on?

From what I have read it doesnt kill it too bad, but from what I know, the NGPC has crazy good battery life in the first place, so im not worried about it.

I've had two frontlit NGPCs (one I had done, the other I did myself) and while it was visible in pitch black, it completely washed out the screen. I hated it.

Wow I hate tiny stuff I'm sure I would have screwed this one up. Fantastic work and a really cool mod too! Too bad you can't buy those front lights from a supplier

You can apply this mod to original GBA, GBC, original GB, hell you might even be able to get it in the wonderswan with some work.
