I could respond to that two ways. If you were to say the Metal Gear series hasn't lost it's roots, I'd disagree. But if you specifically mean the Metal Gear Solid series, I agree. Although I think Peace Walker was quite the deviation, what the MGS series is all about is still very much intact.

Most of the games I am thinking of lost their roots and then, as dsheinem said, rediscovered them.

Sonic - After SCD the roots were lost, even though I didn't mind Adventure, and then slowly refound its roots through the GBA, Sonic Colors, and Generations.

Mortal Kombat - The PS2, GC, and oXBOX games were horrible

Rayman - I love the original Rayman but the franchise focused on those stupid Rabids, but the classic 2d limless hero returned in Origins.

Tony Hawk series: Once the skateboard controller was released, that entire series dropped dead. It couldn't be revived at this point, unless the original dev team puts together something reminiscent to THPS 2 or 4. But that likely won't happen.

Metroid (very sadly enough): Other M was an okay game, but it didn't provide the same level of excitement. Having Team Ninja make the game was an incredibly huge mistake. If the Wii U installment does not do Metroid justice, it will be dead to me.

Pokemon: They are running out of ideas.

Mega Man: Probably been said at least 5 times in this thread. Cancellation after cancellation after the creator leaving Capcom after re-cancelation.

The Secret of Mana / Seiken Densetsu series has definitely lost its roots.

Which is pretty sad since the entire series is about a freaking TREE.

The first three games were great. Then Legend of Mana came out and things got kind of weird but it was still a fun experience.

Then there was a weird re-make of the first game, a broken real-time strategy, a hollowed out Roguelike, followed by a game that was a mix of Brave Fencer Musashi and Crystal Chronicles.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Um....I think a lot of people don't get the point of the thread.....anyway.

I feel GTA has GREATLY lost its roots. GTA 4 and judging from the trailer so will 5, sucked the fun out of the game. Rockstar thinks it is making the Godfather of video games, which is stupid cause if we wanted to see a serious crime film WE'D WATCH A MOVIE, not play a game which used to be the most fun series in the world for many of us, and now is dull slow and boring. (disagree with me if you like, cause this is mostly a matter of taste, but don't try to change my mind cause taste is personal and nothing can be done about that).

Sonic games have lost their roots. As I've said previously on this forum, Mega Drive Sonic games used to be about slow careful platforming and only used the fast sections as a reward after you got past a hard section, and ofc as marketing material. The level design would slow you down before a hard platforming section and then reward you for clearing it.

Now days people think Sonic is only about holding right and going as fast as possible. They even added the homing attack (useful in 3D I guess, but stupid in 2D) to 2D sonic games, and that boost thing from Sonic Rush, to make it even less about platforming and more about "ooh look sonic is going fast, now he's going through a loop, OMG OMG look at Sonic look at Sonic he's so cool he's so cool".

I disagree about Castlevania. I think, especially from the p.o.v of handhelds, they have always stuck to the dungeon-crawling style.

Later on came the robust customization options of magic, armor, weapon infusion, etc.

On the other hand, every console release since SOTN has been utter garbage. Shitty controls, wonky camera angles, and boring storylines.

Lords of Shadow was impressive as I thought it did a good job of conveying a compelling story, and had crisp, addictive gameplay; although it did lack in the exploration department, since it was a rather linear game.

But even with Order of Ecclesia, they still stuck with the tried-and-true formula.

Oh yeah, Judgment sucked sweaty fat guy ass through a straw.

Has anyone else played the Castlevania Adventure Rebirth on Virtual Console? I think it's worth the couple of bucks to play it.

Yes, it is a revamp of the Castlevania Adventure for GB. There is also a Contra Rebirth, and Excitebike World Rally which has 4-player online.

wow......good job promoting those Nintendo. Xbox got a crappy 4 player Castlevania game and they wouldn't stop talking about it. I thought all Wiiware had were flash game ports, that crappy wind god platformer and Sonic 4...
