To clarify for anyone, turning off updates means turning off WiiConnect24. WiiConnect24 allows the Wii to update without you clicking yes, if that is off it has to wait until you turn it on and click yes or no (so at that point just click no).

If you are on 4.3U and modded, you should be good for now. No disks have any updates beyond that so if something comes out that has an update (doubtful) just wait before playing it.

In other news I got my Wii to run a USB Loader which rips the games to a USB Hard Drive. It is nothing that is too important, but the games run a little smoother and I don't need to worry about damaging them. Plus I just can...so why not.

I never heard of the Wii doing an automatic update. I'm pretty certain that it will notify you of an update but you have to acknowledge & accept to install the update.

Ah yeah, you are right. It pulls in various data for channels while in standby and checks for software updates. But up until this point it has always asked you first. Still though, it could auto update if the connection is there (I'm sure they could find a reason to do that without needing consent if they felt the need). Better safe then sorry if you are soft modded. But there is software to always block updates if you want WiiConnect24 on to update channel info.

There hasn't been a Wii update for 2 years.

Last system update was in "June 21, 2010" so almost two years ago.

I haven't seen anyone mention the fact that even IF Nintendo puts out another update, all you have to do is flash your firmware up to match.
My Wii's optical drive went out a year after I got it, and rather than throw it away i decided to try some of the first hacks (using Zelda) to open up the system. Anytime I got a new game that had a firmware update with it (Mario Galaxy), I just went and downloaded the next firmware update, flashed it, and continued playing games. I have a 1tb usb external drive camped out next to my Wii now that I rip all my games too, not to emntion the added benefit of all the homebrew apps like emulators.
