Boxing?

Post by SpaceBooger »

Anyone here still watch Boxing?

With all of the MMA stuff nowadays Boxing falls into the retro sport category.

Since this is a retro gaming site, I was wondering if anyone, other than me, was big into boxing?
I mention this because I am excited to watch the middleweight champion of the world, who is a local boy, defend his title for the first time tonight.

If you don't watch boxing tonight's Kelly Pavlik fight would be a good starting point.

Yeah, I'm a big boxing fan too. Been following the sport ever since the Hagler/Hearns/Leonard/Duran rivalry.
Saw the fight between Pavlik and that Welsh "fighter" earlier this morning(South African time). What a total mismatch! Pavlik is good but this enforced mandatory defence against this clearly inferior challenger, was just a waste of everybodys time.

There were 4 fights last night and two first round knockouts. I have not seen a first round KO in a while:

Here is a great 1st round KO from last night Pall Williams vs Carlos Quintana Rematch. Quintana was the favorite, you just need to watch the first 2:30 of the following video:

As for the main event - Youngstown Ohio's Kelly Pavlik defending his title showed his power - and I mean POWER - and all three rounds are worth watching:

The stats for Kelly from this fight was amazing... He can be the savior that brings boxing back to the main stream!

I'm very much into boxing. I'll give my thoughts on yesterday's fights (excluding Forrest/Mora which I haven't yet seen):

Kelly Pavlik TKO3 Gary Lockett: Not much to say, really. Lockett was badly out of his depth against Pavlik, and it didn't help that he stood right in front of the heavy-handed champ with very little head movement. Pavlik has really impressed me with the run of tough fights that he has taken (Zertuche, Miranda, Taylor x2), so you can't really begrudge him having an easy night.

Juan Manuel Lopez TKO1 Daniel Ponce De Leon: WOW! Lopez has really arrived on the world scene now, by knocking out the most dangerous super bantamweight in one round. This always figured to be a shoot-out with both fighters having 49 KOs between them, but I didn't expect Lopez to be the one ending things early. Hopefully, Lopez will go after the other champs in this divsion. I pick him to beat any of them.

Paul Williams TKO1 Carlos Quintana: This was equally unexpected as the above result, with Williams destroying in one round the guy who schooled him 4 months previously. This was the first time that Williams has shown this kind of power at top level, as he normally relies on his 100-punch-a-round output to wear guys down. Still, he didn't really show anything different from their first fight up until the KO. He is still way too open, allowing Quintana to land some nice left hands flush. Williams can remain a belt holder, but will never become the number one welterweight.

I used to love boxing but I haven't had a tv in four years and so I can't just tune into friday night fights. Boxing is such an awesome sport I don't see it ever really dying and the retro title seems a bit extreme. MMA is cool and all but the terminology/techniques get a little bit too goofy for me. I mean I can't take something seriously when a scrawny white farmer boy from oklahoma is doing the "gangsta lean" ^^;

I was hoping, after looking at Lockett's stats, that either I would see a slugfest or a KO of the Year type punch... instead I saw a mandatory fight that made Pavlik look phenomenal.
In last night's fight you could see the adjustments Kelly made in his defense, he watches tapes and studies film better than the Patriots study defensive calls.

The Paul Williams statement I agree with, the only changes since the last fight was his ability to finish... but as you said he leaves himself wide open.

And I will not watch Kimbo Slice. I think boxing is twice as nice. I do not like MMA, I am not a fan Sam I am.

Hey Im a boxing fan too!!!!

Well you may know how destroyed I am in seeing quintana getting devastating, that was just plain ugly. :(

But on the other hand Juanma made a great performance against one great boxer Ponce de Leon. And believe it or not Im a big Pavlik fan he just scholed Locket. I watch mma now and then but I think boxing is a better sport you only use your hands and you gota have a really good condition to be 12 3 minutes round compare to 3 5 minutes round.
