Brazil only abolished slavery in 1888, so it might not be a good parameter. Though, to be fair, slavery was very weak by then, because slave trade was made illegal in 1850 and slaves' children were considered free by law in 1871.
Most countries in Spanish America abolished slavery when they got their independence and became republics in the 1810-20s. They had wars for independence (also unlike Brazil, which just declared independence, kept its monarchy and no one cared), though, so I don't know if it counts as "peaceful solutions".

As a proponent of strict constitutionalism myself, I tend to agree with BoringSupreez. But as we know, there are supreme court judges who sit on both sides of the argument. So either way, it's not like either of you are 100% correct, since the academic arguments are still being waged.BoringSupreez wrote:So is the constitution. That's why we have amendments.dsheinem wrote:Law is a living, breathing concept - this has always been true and also applies to the Holy Constitution.BoringSupreez wrote:As far as the constitution and federal laws allow such things, yes.

It's funny how those present at the birth of our nation weren't "strict constitutionalists" yet some today are.

Ah such a fantastic leap of logic. Yes, I hate black people. I'm just not sure how someone can read Ron Paul and his history and not be repulsed by his blatant bigotry unless they too were bigots. Perhaps you can enlighten us.saturnfan wrote:Ah such a fantastic leap of logic. Yes, I hate black people. Well for one, I like most of his ideas on governance, the constitution and personal liberty. When you are as right wing as I am, you tend to sympathize with right wing causes. It’s just a natural progression. Ron Paul is about as good as it will get for me.
Any questionable statements he may have said don’t bother me very much. His overall body of work is overwhelmingly pro-liberty. It far outweighs any of the negative.

There was no good solution to that problem. No government is perfect. You'll always end up with times when you have to pick which principals to compromise.MrPopo wrote:Alright, I've got an idea for an amendment. How about an amendment that bans slavery? What? Half the states wouldn't ratify it? Well then how do we get rid of it?Hatta wrote:If the Constitution is outdated, the solution isn't to ignore it, but to amend it.

Precisely. Which is what makes Ron Paul so dangerous; he doesn't seem to understand that principle.DinnerX wrote:There was no good solution to that problem. No government is perfect. I disagree. 100 instances of good can be outweighted by one instance of bad if that instance is bad enough.Any questionable statements he may have said don’t bother me very much. His overall body of work is overwhelmingly pro-liberty. It far outweighs any of the negative.
