Ok. So about a week ago I decided to power off, unplug and box my PS3 Slim (320GB) up so that I could bring out my oXbox for a few days (I have limited space with only one component hookup on the tv) .
Typically, when I power off the PS3 I just do it in the XMB where it says "Power Off Console." So that's what I did and everything seemed fine. I waited a couple minutes. Then I unplugged the system and boxed it up.
Fast forward a week, when I decide that I want to hook my PS3 back up...
After getting everything plugged in and arranged, I powered it on and then received the message that said "Your system was not powered down correctly last time it was turned off. You may have corrupted the hard drive. The system will now run a system check" and I'm thinking... "well, what the hell? There's no other way to power the system off since there isn't a power on/off switch in the back of the PS3 like the older fat models!?"
Am I missing something here, or is this just a horrible design flaw? I checked the system manual and there isn't anything in there about how to properly power down the system and then unplug it from the wall without possibly damaging the system and/or data.
This is ridiculous. I shouldn't be scared to turn off and unplug the damn console!
Any thoughts/ideas?

Not keen on the PS3 since its my son's system, but as in any PC I think you have to give the PS3 time to shut down and do its internal "house cleaning" before unplugging. Maybe wait a few minutes after shutting down before pulling the cord.

These are some method that are used to power down the ps3
1- From the XMB --> Shut Down
2- Pressing the actual button on the console
Note- You can saftely unplug the ps3 as long as the console is on idle.
As for this part "You may have corrupted the hard drive. The system will now run a system check"" it never happened to me, but i assume your HD is just corrupt.
My suggestions
1- Can reformat the HD and see what happens.
2- Buy a new HD

I've had the happen to be. Odds are you unplugged it too soon. Wait till the light is red first. Let it do its thing of checking your drive. Mine was fine. One of the most irritating things about the PS3, its easy to turn on, but not off.

I've had the system do the HDD check several times, but I've never lost any data. Consoles are becoming more and more like PCs, both in good ways and in bad.

I had that message pop up once for no seemingly good reason. I freaked out because I thought I was going to loose four years worth of game saves. I didn't though and I haven't seen the message since so who knows what its on about.

It can just be a slight flaw on the HDD. It´s just an error message that gets triggered.
When a computer or console tells you something it does not necesarily have to be true.
The PS3 bootet and saw something weird on the HDD or unexpected and threw this error message. That or your little brother has been playing your ps3. Pimpslap him!
