But damn did it satisfy the need to use different powers and had the best ability to allow me to approach situations in whatever way I choose (unlike any other game I can think of at the moment).
I await the game that is inbetween Oblivion and Bioshock in terms of game play.
Bioshock is no RPG of course
Bioshock was the last straw for me. I kept putting off a decent PC upgrade for months, but then Bioshock comes out and I just cant run it worth a shit. I just ordered these:

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Ati drivers rocked back on my 9800 Pro. I'm expecting an equal amount of rocking. My nVidia 7600GT drivers piss me off in more ways than one. (Like forcing 75hz whenever you enable aspect ratio scaling. This makes all emulated console games have shittier motion, because they want the 60hz they were made for.)

Picked this game up for about twenty bucks used(which is just about the only way I'll buy a 360 game since they're so overpriced) I played it for a few hours and I love the atmosphere of the game and the story seems interesting. I love the different powers. They are fun to use and hacking is cool too. I like having a game that gives me lots of interesting ways to take out the enemy. Strategy and variety are two things I love in my games.
I only have two complaints. One being my usual annoyance with shooters which is being attacked and not knowing where it's coming from until after I've already taken some damage. Also, like every 360 game it seems, Bioshock is a bit buggy. I had the game freezing up for seconds at a time almost every few steps I took. Like the damn game just kept hiccuping. It fortunately stopped after I turned off the 360 and then started it back up again, but I've heard of other players having this same issue with the game.
I got a copy of Stranglehold too, which is pretty cool(though my two complaints about Bioshock kind of apply there as well). I'm finally getting some use out of my dust collecting 360

I believe it was the story and the atmosphere that blew everyone away. For many, it was enough to overshadow the repetitive fetch quests and lack of enemy variation. Since you've beaten many Big Daddies, I suggest that you give it a bit more time until you reach the climax of the story. You'll know it once you are there - and then you won't have to bother with the tacked-on POS final quests.
I dunno man, I've played a lot of FPSs on PC and this one just didn't grip me. It was quite pretty, and I liked the setting, but the actual story just didn't take off in time, so I lost interest. I also hated being a scavenger, but I couldn't bare the thought of passing anything up. I felt compelled to search every inch of every room, and I hated every second of it.RackGaki wrote:Mozgus wrote:I never did finish this game. That's too bad. That's often been the Looking Glass-alums storytelling style, though--you choose how deeply into the story you wish to be invested by picking up audio logs and such. If you're unable to restrain yourself from scavenging (oldschool RPG influence there?) , I can see why games like Bioshock and System Shock wouldn't be for you. A shame.

Hmm, interesting posts. I guess I'll post more of my thoughts after I get a bit further into the game. I don't really play many games on PC and I'm not a huge shooter fan in general, so my opinion of the game may end up being different from Mozgus. I honestly will never play any shooter unless there seems to be something original or creative about the gameplay, and having a good story helps too. That's why I got Bioshock and I picked up Stranglehold because I thought the style system seemed cool and hey it's John Woo. Gears of War I thought was mediocre. Wow, you can take cover behind objects. Big freaking deal, that's not enough to make a shooter interesting and it's been done before
Anyway, I don't really mind all the collecting in Bioshock so far. It's just second nature for me to scour every room I go to in a game. I do it almost without thinking. And yeah, it's probably from playing older rpgs. What would annoy me is having to collect stuff in a massive, maze-like game where it's easy to get lost but Bioshock does a good job of helping me keep track of where I've been and where I'm going with its well done map. And the arrow and objective helps me always know where I need to be. Massive games where it's easy to get lost and lose track of where you have and haven't been are a major turnoff for me, which is why I don't really play any Grand Theft Auto style games anymore with their ridiculously massive cities that you have to memorize.
One thing I find a bit annoying is the somewhat random placement of enemies and the re-spawning. Re-spawning enemies is on my list of gaming don'ts. Real pet peeve of mine. Since Bioshock seems to have a small number of splicers with only a small amount of recorded dialogue, it wasn't the smartest move on their part. More repetition than necessary.
