Do Smart TVs Herald the End of Consoles?

Post by BurningDoom »

Obviously, the first generation of any technology is not gonna be the best. So I don't expect this to happen anytime soon. But with the advent of such technology, it's got to get you wondering: As the technology continues to grow and evolve, what will be the point of consoles anymore? We are already pretty freaking close to console power as it is on devices like the iPhone and iPad; and mobile gaming has already been shown to be very popular. Smart TVs won't be far behind in power, and many of the games will likely be similar to mobile games. As this trend continues to grow, it wouldn't be hard to imagine Smart TVs getting high-end video cards and the such, as well as third-party software companies supporting them.

So will this leave the XBoxs, Playstations, and Nintendos in a closet to collect dust? Will the next-generation that's been rumored to be on the horizon be the last? What will these companies have to do to lengthen the lives of home consoles?

Nobody wants game system upgrades tied to TV upgrades. Too much expense. A new TV means paying for a new game system and a new game system means paying for a new TV.

I only bought my PS3 because my 24in monitor had a HDMI input, and then a year later i ended up buying a 32in tv with 1080p.

I think it might harbinger the death of portable consoles. As it stands, things are very media-rich right now and nary a gaming-only console to be found.
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

Yeah, I could definitely see this. When your phone can do games plus tons more, why bother? I'm sure portables will stay strong especially in Japan, but perhaps the competition will be more fierce with smart phones and all that taking off.

I sure don't. Good God, maybe it might happen, look at how many times the iPhone and iPad gets repurchased by the sheep.

good lord no smart tvs won't replace consoles.

closest thing I can see is consoles becoming even more media-centric somehow than the are now

Which will make me puke more. I love how you have to get past several media/junk tabs on the new 360 dashboard to get to the "games" section.
