Post by nielse16 »

Fifty are now available to download for free. Were any others released?

THANKYOU!

I know what I'll be doing this evening! I still have some older Demos when they were took down before, good to read that now there are fifty to choose from. All the demos go to my SD Card so I will always have them to play.

Usually there are only five demos at a given time. Many missed out on earlier ones. Strange that there are now fifty all at once. Maybe Nintendo is worried about WiiU sales and now giving more support to the Wii?

Here's a recap for those who haven't been keeping score. In 2009, Nintendo finally started allowing for developers to release free demos of their WiiWare games. Only five games were allowed to have demos at first, but it was a start. Then a few months later, Nintendo took down all five demos. No one knows why.

Then they came back with demos again in late 2010, this time allowing more developers to take advantage of the demo process. However, the demos were all still available for a limited time only, and one by one, they have all slowly disappeared from the Wii shop.

That takes us to today, a day that without warning or explanation, all 50 of the previously released WiiWare demos came back. What? Why? Thank You? Okay then! Great! Was it the phenomenal sales of Monster Hunter 3G in Japan, a 3DS game that was supported by a free demo prior to release in Japan, that caused Nintendo to suddenly have change of heart about demos in general? Is this all a huge mistake, to be "fixed" by Nintendo at any moment?

Thats really cool, I'll check if they have appeared on the UK shop and dload a bunch that I missed. I remember reading somewhere that the lack of demos from Nintendo was to do with Japanese pride, apparently they think that their products should be strong enough to sell by themselves and if you let the punters try the goods before they get their money out, you are admitting that you think your products are inferior.

Thats all well and good, but the rest of the world doesnt think like that. I've bought a couple of games as a direct result of the demos, games that I would have overlooked if I hadnt had the chance to play them first.

I'm still not home and going nuts to see the selection.

@ Curly - A recent demo that was on before all fifty appeared is Motoheroz. Reminds me of NES Excitebike or C64 Kikstart 2, you control the angle of the "wheelies" of an offroad truck with additional obstacles. Very addicting, hopefully it will come out on disc compilation as in the Bit.Trip series.

Thanks again nielse16!

Okay, I downloaded ALL the demos, why not they are free! I already have Eight so only had to download 42 of the Demos. Nice thing about the site is it highlights already downloaded files in blue. I also can page backwards thru the download listing to save time looking for titles. All fifty demos can fit on a 4gb SD card. I have a 8gb SD card and still have a little over half empty left on it. The 42 downloads took around an hour, I kept the temptation of playing any until all were dumped direct to the SD card. I am so sick of seeing Mario running and getting the coins during all the downloads. There were a flying Mario and Luigi at one download. Anyone notice the irony of Mario collecting coins during the download process? On regular point purchases the download takes longer and Mario gets more coins from the consumer!

Some games demos worth looking at, many more still to try out.

1. KyotoKei - Side scrolling SHMUP color change as in Ikaruga
2. Liight - Match of color lights as in the game Mecury Meltdown
3. Soccer Bashi - Arcanoid style game
4. World of Goo - Build towers of globs to reach a pipe.
