Looking for advice on playing Vagrant Story.

So I started Vagrant Story yesterday and I just can't get my head around the game. I have looked at internet guides and everything to help me understand the combat but the game is still giving me problems. I got to the mines but gave up because none of my weapons were doing damage to the dragon, I have assembled my weapons using different parts and gems to try and max their power against dragons but the game was still predicting zeros.
So I have restarted the game, the first level was so easy, all my attacks did large amounts of damage to enemies, I killed the first boss in 3 hits. How can I make it so my weapons keep dealing this kind of damage? From what I have read online and in the manual the type of enemies I fight change my weapons make up, if I fight nothing but undead then my weapon will be good at killing undead but bad at killing everything else. I also need to have weapons that ared edged, brunt or piercing, there is also elemental damage as well, some weapons seem to be good against air monsters and so on.

I need help breaking this down otherwise I will never beat this game.

The game is brutal in general. Have you gotten down the timing on the combo's? That can really, really help. I remember learning it by accident I think.

i've got the chain timing down but what good is the chain when your attacks to next to no damage. Later one I couldn't do more than one anyway because the bosses would block every hit after the first. It isn't my risk because I keep lowering it.

Well hopefully someone else can help, I haven't played the game in like a decade or something. I just remember -having- to rock those combo's on bosses or dragons and stuff to even do anything, but I forgot how the mechanics work so if you're not doing any damage maybe the comboing does nothing either.

Good game but yeah it doesn't hold your hand, lol.
