What Light Guns Do You Own? Favorite?

Post by racketboy »

Light guns seem to be one of the periphials that are the hardest to shop for. Very rarely are they "official" guns, and where there are, they are usually quite valuable on the aftermarket.

So I thought I would take a little survey and see what guns everyone has and what complaints, if any, you have about them.

If you can find a manufacturer name and/or picture of the gun, that would be very helpful

I really loved the shape/design of the classic black saturn stunner, but I've since completely fallen in love with the Guncon 2 as far as comfort goes. It's a shame that it's such an eyesore and that it only works with older CRTs. The Guncon 3 is a step down in all areas. Hell, the Guncon 3 doesn't even feel as accurate thanks to always having to be recalibrated.

If only you could play House of the Dead and Virtua Cop with a Guncon...mmmm....
You know what would make the GunCon 3 rock? A PSN port of Crisis Zone.

My least favorite would be the official Dreamcast gun that was bundled with House of the Dead 2 (in Japan, at least). Uncomfortable and unsightly. HotD2 was a bit of a let down to begin with, but then being forced to play it with ...that... well that just hurt. Never got to play with the unlicensed US guns...how did those pan out?

Oh, and you can't forget the justifier! If you don't play the shooting segments of Snatcher with that then you're totally missing out. I've always wanted to try out Konami's Hyper Blaster with an import copy of Shinjuku Cop 24 Hours, but I'd still have to track down a Capture Eye...hrml... a bit too expensive for my blood.

Original NES "Zapper" in two-tone gray. None of that orange crap here. (1ST PARTY)
- Pros- fairly accurate
- Cons- the loud "clang" every time you squeeze off a round and the trigger protrudes too far

Sega Master System "Light Phaser" (1ST PARTY)
- Pros- extremely accurate and beefy feeling. Nice trigger feel and response. Mine is dead-on accurate.
- Cons- none for me

Sega Dreamcast

Interact "Starfire" (3RD PARTY)
- Pros- Many extra features, like auto reload, and a reload button
- Cons- Mine is terribly inaccurate, auto reload is realistic(as shooting off screen) which means it is slow

Mad Catz "Dream Blaster" (3RD PARTY)
- Pros- Comfy to use and hold, fairly accurate (less than NES Zapper, better than the Starfire), fast auto reload.
- Cons- not as accurate as it should be, kind of plain looking
Atari2600/Colecovision/Dreamcast/DS-Lite/GBA/NES/N64/Gamecube/Saturn/Master System/Genesis-32X-CD/PS1/PS2/PSP/TG16/Xbox/Xbox 360/

Budget Gaming PC: .... AMD Phenom II x3 720, 6870 1GB, 4GB 1600 Ram

I had (for a brief while) one or two of the official Saturn gun "Virtua Gun" (blue plastic, at least in the Europe versions?).

As I got also two grey plastic "Logic 3 Predator" 3rd party guns that work for Saturn AND Playstation*. I decided to keep the grey plastic ones as they seemed sufficiently accurate (for my non-connoisseur tastes, as accurate as the 1st party guns).

*This was before I knew about the mess with PS1 light guns not being compatible for all games, and apparently they are not Guncon compatible - a shame.

Now I was briefly considering getting a DC light gun, but I found about the existence of a light gun that will work in all screens (like the Wii mote and the Guncon 3, it requires "sensors" and calibration) and can be used on PCs as well as XBox and PS2. Although I'm not buying it until the devs get a Vista driver ready. The gun is the LCD TopGun and may be interesting for others to have a look at.

This seemed like a flaw to me, but of course I have the Saturn guns already. But mainly, my question is which games do you want to play on those systems that don't exist as arcade games (then the other part is whether those particular arcade games are well emulated on MAME or something else).

The first party sega guns for the saturn are great as well as the official sega gun for the dreamcast, which only will work with ntsc j games :(

I have the SegaCD enforcer gun.. It looks like a colt revolver and feels pretty good. I haven't played with it long, so I'm not to sure about reliability.

I have:

Nes: Zapper

SNES: Super Scope

Saturn: Official (came with Virtua Cop 2)

Dreamcast: Official (came with HOTD2)

Playstation: G-con45 and a Predator

Playstation 2: G-con2

Playstation 3: G-con3 (it's terrible, i'm tempted to just sell it)

Wii: Fake zapper shell

Out of all of them, the G-con45 is the most accurate gun I have (tied with Gcon2, but I prefer the gcon45 due to it's simpler design), followed by the Dreamcast gun, my saturn gun is accurate enough but not perfect, the super scope is just stupid and huge, and the zapper's "PERTWAAAAANNNGG!!!" gets on my nerves after about the 3rd round of Duck Hunt.
