Although this is supposed to be for the Vita, I can only find one emulator for WP7, an NES one. It was unplayable last week but it's finally in a playable state without sound. Emulation is one of the few reasons I almost bought an Xperia Play instead of my Venue Pro.

I can't wait to see what the soft-hack community ends up doing with the Vita. Hopefully we'll see fully working Dreamcast and Saturn emulators.

If we are shooting for the Gamecube why not the Wii as well? We have the Dolphin emulator running on PC systems at a pretty good pace, depending on game, but it ain't a bad thought, no?

Sony will have made this pretty damn hack-proof by the time of release. Not saying it won't be possible, but I expect to see many complaints about bricked Vitas in the near future.

A portable Gamecube would be totally awesome.

On a related note, I noticed that Amazon finally has the larger memory cards for pre-order (they previously only had a 4GB model). The cards are still overpriced, but not as badly as they are in Japan. In fact, the price of the 32GB model is just a little more expensive then their proprietary memory sticks (for cameras) of the same size.

If emulation of PS2/GC games is going to be feasible, you are going to want a decent sized stick :)

What? It's already been hacked... The geniuses at Sony put the Vita keys in the PS3 firmware (WHY??). I'm pretty sure that Sony's security department is ran by monkeys. In fact, I suspect half of the company is ran by monkeys. They are a fucking joke.

Those proprietary memory cards are a fucking joke as well. I thought they would have learned their lesson with the memory stick shit on PSP.

By "learned their lesson" do you mean "make huge profits on selling cards"?

I ended up just buying a cheap chinese rip offs and hoping for the best... Aside from the hardware (which was sold at a loss), Wipeout Pulse and Metal Gear Acid (which I promptly swapped for Lumines because Acid sucked), Sony never got a penny out of me from the PSP.

It's currently experiencing terrible sales in Japan with only a small percentage actually opting for the 'premium' 3G model. Did Sony even consider who the target market was for these devices or are they (foolishly) going to take on Apple for the casual market? Anybody who is remotely interesting should know how to tether their mobile phone's 3G connection to WiFi, rendering the 3G model absolutely fucking pointless.

I think the Vita will struggle even more than the PSP did to gain a footing in the west.

Yeah, that was an option - but one that often burned people. I still think that Sony's approach to memory cards is good business, even if it sucks for consumers.

I think it will have a tough time too, but ultimatley time will tell whether or not it can be considered successful or not. It's the same long-term game Sony is playing with the PS3. I don't think that any Sony handheld will overtake a Nintendo handheld in the US (Nintendo is their main competitor for sales, not Apple or HTC or whatever), but a strong second place showing can still be profitable. Certainly the PSP is the most successful non-Nintendo handheld in history, and I don't see why the Vita, given time, couldn't be just as successful as the PSP. The 3DS and Vita will probably both lag behind the DS and PSP given the explosion in mobile gaming apps, but that doesn't mean that there's no profit to be had.

Should Apple iProducts or other mobile devices even be considered actual competition for Sony and Nintendo? The people that I have seen playing games on these devices are the people who wouldn't have purchased a dedicated game machine anyway.

I play games on my iOS devices all the time, sometimes for hours at a time. I think mobile devices will continue to take a bite out of the handheld market, but they are still viable. For one thing, it is hard to wrap up a bunch of .99 cent apps in a birthday/christmas present for a kid.
