Anyone know how long it takes for a book to be released in eBook form, after it's been released in an official capacity? I want the new Ender book by Orson Scott Card which is being released on 1/17/2012, but Amazon has it's Kindle edition release slated as next year, 2013! I dont have a problem with buying the physical book but Im going on a cruise at the end of the month and want to take my kindle with me so I can read it and any other books I'm currently reading (Ice and Fire, etc) and I'd rather just purchase the hardcover and wait for it to be shipped, and then just pirate the e-edition so I can read it on my kindle since it wont be out for over a damn year.
I know it's a bit of an odd question, but as an example, movies and TV shows usually end up on torrents or newsgroups within a day of release, usually sooner. So I'm wondering how long it might take for a .mobi of Shadows in Flight to appear on the net.

Re: Sort of a question about piracy on books (hear me out)
I have always been one against pirating games. I have no beef if other people do it, but I personally did not do it except to briefly test a game before buying.
However, I have absolutely no remorse about downloading ebooks. It is my experience that these publishers put almost zero effort into their official ebook releases. In many cases, it appears they just slap the book on an OCR machine and publish it as-is. It's ridiculous. Maybe I just got the duds, but I can't believe there can even be an ebook industry if this is the quality of the average book. Terrible type setting, misspellings, OCR errors… it's shameful.
Like I said, maybe I just happened to get bad ebooks, but I couldn't believe it. If I am going to have all those errors and a terribly laid out format, I will just settle for downloading them from usenet.

I wonder what Admiral Ackbar would say about this thread.
Since this signature affects old posts, I'm leaving a message here in case anyone searches for my username. This account died in early 2013. I am no longer a fundamentalist.

Oh, and to answer your question, some variation of ebook for the book in question will probably be available on usenet any day now.

I just realized I had a huge run-on sentence in my OP. My apologies. That's just awful grammar. Yikes.
Anyway, Ackbar can continue to call the shots on the Battle of Endor, because this isn't really a discussion of ebook piracy. In truth, I actually want to purchase the book from Amazon for my Kindle 100% legally. It's $10, which I think is a little over priced, but I will gladly pay for it because I love the series and OSC is my 2nd favorite sci-fi writer. So I'll support him (even though he's a little nutty).
The problem is that I *cant* buy the book. I want the e-edition, so if the e-edition isn't coming out until 2013, then I'll gladly buy the HC and just download the e-version. Either way, I've paid for my copy.

If you've bought a physical I see no problem with downloading an ebook. Ol' Orson's got your money already.indecks wrote: The problem is that I *cant* buy the book. I agree with this. My problem is the same with Chicfila. OSC Donates money to anti gay groups just like Chicfila does. I really want the new book but I have a problem with giving him money if he supports gay bashers. Then again I have to know what Ol' Bean is doing. I could care less about Ender.AmishSamurai wrote:If you've bought a physical I see no problem with downloading an ebook. If you don't want to give Orson money because of what he does with it, fine, but I don't think you ought to be able to have the book anyway.sbk wrote:I agree with this. And you could limit it significantly by borrowing from a library.BoringSupreez wrote: If you don't want to give Orson money because of what he does with it, fine, but I don't think you ought to be able to have the book anyway.
