won another DC on ebay, this time a boxed one. Got game swith it and a few demo discs too.
Anyway its my first ever '1' console, the rest have all been '0', so this probably means I can;t play back ups, I never even tried earlier.
First thing you notice is the swirl doesn't swirl, its just a picture no noise either. Then the drive, its hell of aloud, it makes some racket, reads games fine but just he laser moving is crazy loud and yes its greased ok etc, i checked it when I cleaned the console. I thought the slightly dry one I got ages ago was loud before I lube dit, it was in stealth mode compared to this one!
I dunno how else to explain but the newer console doesn't 'feel' right.
Anyone else found the 0 and 1 consoles to be totally different like this?

Really, that's damn good to know. I live in Australia and was getting ready to buy another DC but was concerned about getting one that could not play burns.
