All PSXes and PSOnes output RGB, but not component.

Went ahead and bid on a "Madcatz S-AV universal video cable". It's $6 which will be much cheaper than buying 2 official cables. And then I won't have to mess with my TV either :)

It supports PS, PS2, PS3, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Xbox and X360 apparently. Not sure about the xboxes but the PS and Nintendo plugs look right. Does anyone know if these are good?

Looks a bit too expensive. Won't the signal be in 240p anyway? Either way S-Video should look great.

I noticed very little difference between s-video and component via a PS2 on PS1 games.

Speaking of that, I assume someone here has recommended just using a PS2 with component already. The only game I cared for that had issues on the PS2 was Tomba.

Maybe not normally. Yet it's a COLOSSAL difference on TVs that do not support 240p. On the worst affected sets s-video avoids that issue by at least showing a picture. Way better than the dreaded "no signal" error component will get them.

Yep.

I'd just use my PS2, but it died and I'm using PS3 B/C for PS2 games. Already had to repair that PS3 twice, though, so I want to keep stress on it to a minimum.

So those cables came in the mail today, new in box. After cutting through the brutal packaging I hooked it up to my CRT HDTV, and I'm pretty impressed. The increase in quality and the details I could notice was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. $5.40 shipped, very worth it. Way better than what I expected from Mad Catz.

First thing I noticed is that the build quality is awesome. The wires aren't very thick but they're nicely shielded and should last a long time. The contacts aren't gold or anything but they're solid and give a nice connection. The console connectors all fit well. It's pretty much exactly right.

(My old HDTV doesn't have a scaler or comb filter, so the signal quality is represented pretty well here).

First I tested with my N64. I don't have too many games for this, but I have to say Ocarina looked much nicer without the video noise. The texture blurring lessened the impact a little but the lighting effects in Hyrule Field were much more enjoyable. Sharper lines and brighter colors throughout. All the 2D stuff like heart containers and text was pretty right down to the pictures. Smash Bros, low-poly as it is, was improved similarly. I noticed tiny details in the Temple of Time that I hadn't noticed with my stock composite cables.

Next was the PS1. Really big improvement over PS3 composite cables. I really wanted to test Rayman, but my console thought it was an audio CD >_>. Soul Blade looked nice and smooth with more defined edges. Final Fantasy IX video looked as good as earlier DVDs. Prerendered backgrounds were sharper and prettier and although the 3D was still jaggy, the textures looked better too. Ace Combat 2 was the biggest improvement by far. The planes and environments looked sharp and fluid rather than noisy and blurry. I actually started to think it was really pretty playing mission 3, which is a night mission. I grew up playing really bad flightsims in the 90s so something top-notch like this was a big nostalgia trip. Title screen is really beautiful. If you've seen that title screen you should know what I'm talking about. Wipeout 3 looked like a whole different game, even in widescreen.

2D games were the biggest improvement, though. Final Fantasy V and VI looked better than it does on PS3 somehow! Ms. Pac-Man looked nice, too, I suppose :P

I only tested the S-Video cable. Not sure about the composite side. I'd expect it would also be great for xbox if your TV doesn't have component input.

Also, something I wasn't expecting or looking for: The audio! It took me by surprise. Sounds on both systems were crisper and more detailed than I had noticed before. Ocarina and FF9 sounded gorgeous of course. I guess a little shielding goes a long way!

Overall I feel great about the cable and I don't miss RGB at all. If you see a MadCatz S-AV cable you might want to pick it up. These aren't very popular on eBay either. No one else bid on mine.

Sooo, that's that. Problem solved, and I really want to play Ace Combat again :)

I just hooked my ole PS1 to my new CRT and was blown away by the IQ. These 3 years spent in a CRT-less wilderness were truly terrible. However, then I started reading about connections and was reminded that apparently composite=compo$hite. Well, ok...it`s not THAT bad, but I have a bit of a spare cash so might as well invest in a proper cable.

Now, reading about all these CSyncs on lumas and other sorcery makes my head spin. Need advice: am I okay just buying a standard RGB/Scart cable from ebay (about 6-7 quid) or is it worth investing in this: RGB SCART cable lead sync on luma? (about 17 quid from retrogamingcables). Or maybe just get an S-Video cable? (~4 quid)

TV = CRT Sony Trinitron KV25X5U.

If your TV has a scart input a normal scart cable will be fine. That said, the build quality of the cable itself matters, but that's about your only worry. Most of the special sync stuff is for folks in the USA where SCART didn't exist so we have to adapt it to other RGB displays.
