are the clear saturns the easily modded type?

Basically any Saturn with round power/reset buttons is the more easily modded type.

Actually I suppose if you KOF or something else that had a ROM cart you would need to make a copy and switch the region as well.

KoF '95 is the only game like that. Not exactly much of an issue.

Nope. Like North America and Europe, Japan had oval then round. I'm not sure about Korea & Brazil.

I left the quantifier "basically" in there for this reason. Even then, the 64-pin chip version or the Sanyo one is still easier than the model 1.

Absolutely not. The models are the same across all regions. Just the case and region coding are different (excluding the Navi). Even the various (yup, more than one from these companies) JVC and Hitachi Saturns fall into the same categories.

The model 1 was released in Korea under the Samsung name.

That was years ago. I'm not in Japan anymore. I did profit from it, though.

Are you collecting various Saturn models or something? As has been said, the only difference is cosmetic. If you look in the right places, you can get a regular grey or white Saturn for a good price.

Yes, it would fit, but you'd be unlikely to find a broken one unless you are physically in Japan or know how to deal with Yahoo! Japan Auctions and/or Rakuten.

64pin can still be modded with the RB chip, you just have to change the jumper setting. There's a thread on it here. http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 25&t=20188

The 32 pin model 2 is ideal, but the 64pin model2 will work easily as well without the hellacious chip mod required to fit a model 1 (oval).

As far as differences between US/J systems, they're effectively the same... both bioses are on the motherboard, and the jumper settings on the motherboard determine which region boots. You can do the old school mod to put a switch on the jumpers to make a dual-region saturn, but if you have a chip and can region patch, or have an action replay, it's pointless.
