Saying "a beer is a beer" is as dumb as saying "a cola is a cola." There's a world of difference between generic K-Mart brand cola and Mexican Coke, and the same sort of thing is true of every type of beverage (except water; those people who have to drink fancy brands of bottled water are just fooling themselves.)
there are huge differences in the taste of water based on how it is treated (or not)

I meant pure water. I agree that there are massive differences in the quality of different water districts, but once it's distilled there's no more difference.

Yeesh, that could do with a little smattering of finings.

What hops did you use? I have a massive hard on for simcoe right now but it's a shame you can't get any for love nor money at the moment. I'm using a lot of super alpha and riwaka in my current Pale Ale recipe.

I'd say the cloudiness has more to do with my crappy camera phone. I used northern, cascade and pearl hops. I grow cascade, nugget and northern so I use those mostly.

I've never used pearl hops. Are they bittering or flavouring?

Flavoring. It's pretty popular and a hard hop to find right now. I was out in Oregon and stopped at a hop grower while they were harvesting them and brought some back.

There's a pretty big hop shortage in the UK at the moment (if you want something a bit more exotic than Kent fuggles, goldings, brewer's gold, bramling cross etc). A lot of micro brewers are having issues sourcing hops for their brews so they're 'experimenting'. Not a good thing...

Anyone try Sam Adams Latitude 48 deconstructed? It's made with three varieties of hops, and before you taste them all blended, you have a beer with only one of the hops at a time. It's a fun experience for anyone who's really into hops, and reading some of the last posts, I'm sure some of you guys will be interested.

My Father used to brew his own beer, I've tried it before, and so have many of my friends. Now there are always exceptions, but I'll say this on home made beer: I'll pass. I swear, they all have a similar taste, and I don't believe you get a good enough return on investment to qualify waiting a month or so for a few bottles of beer. For me, I enjoyed the process of making the beer than the beer itself, but that's personal preference.
