How do I miss these Shmup threads?! Maybe I'm too busy playing them

AAAANYWAYYYYY--

Check out ExedExes

No not ME, the game -- awesome shmup by Capcom -- available on Capcom Classics Collection Volume 1 on PS2 -- or on the Wii VC -- and of course MAME

I wonder, are there any good 2D shmups for the N64? Or do those even exist? haha Other than the ones that can be found on the arcade compilations...

I think Deathsmiles for 360 is a good pick. You can select the difficulty level for each level, which allows you to slowly get used to what's going on in terms of gameplay. It's a bullet hell, but it's still very approachable - especially on the lowest difficulty.
Plus it has infinite continues and characters with a good variety of play-styles.

Nope, not really. There was "Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth", but it was 3D and looked better than it played.

Well, you play and move on a 2D field, which is what someone means when asking if it is a 2D shmup. As opposed to Starfox or any sort of flight style game like that. :)

R-Type (GB)
Nanostray (DS)

And I'll second noise's Iridion II (GBA) recommendation.
