I might try the 360 version some day to form a more well rounded opinion of the game, but the PS3 version pretty much turned me off of it. It was okay, but just felt really average is about every field. Apart from not really liking the game much, I absolutely hated being forced to play as the other characters, and censorship does not sit well with me.

Have you played the Otogi games? Very different take on the 3D hack n slash genre.
I played the first Otogi. Although I never finished it, I was impressed with it. Finishing it some day is on my massive, gaming, to do list. Plus, I heard the sequel was good. Otogi definitely felt like its own, unique thing. I really enjoyed the aerial combat and knocking enemies into buildings and stuff

The censorship in the PS3 version of NG II really put me off from playing it. The violence is a BIG part of the original version of NG II. Removing limbs factors into gameplay, as you can do quick finishers on enemies who have had a limb removed to quickly take them out of combat. Plus, an enemy who has lost of limb will try to take you out with a suicide attack. Also, aesthetically speaking, there was no way the PS3 version could have had the same feel. On the 360 version, blood is always gushing from enemies you take out and limbs are always flying about. If you backtrack through an area you've been through in the game, you will see bodies, limbs and blood everywhere. It becomes a permanent part of the environment. For all its flaws, I've always said that the original 360 version of NG II may be the only game I've ever played that made me feel like I had the interactive equivalent of the Crazy 88 fight scene in Kill Bill or any bloody fight scenen from an old, grindhouse, samurai flick. Ryu leaves a trail of bloody murder behind him everywhere he goes in that game that makes the violence in God of War games I've played pale in comparison

As for the stupid, extra playable characters, in the 360 version you only ever played as Ryu. I used to lurk on the gamefaqs forum for the 360 version, which had a surprisingly mature community, at least back when I was checking it out anyway. People there said the two versions of NG II are very, very different games. Unfortunately, it seems they both have their flaws. So there is no perfect version of NGII. Given the choice though, I personally am glad to have played NG II in all its uncensored, bloody glory. Also, there's a pretty memorable cutscene in the 360 version where you see a naked woman bathing in blood. I'm assuming they cut that from the PS3 version?

The limb removal and suicide attack enemies are still there, but all the blood that gushes out of the enemies in combat was replaced with weird... glowing purple shit. In a way it looks kind of cool, but like you said, it all but ruins the spirit of Ninja Gaiden. It's a pretty neat visual effect but Ninja Gaiden isn't about looking artsy. It's all about the blood and gore.

The scene with the chick bathing in blood is still there. The censorship this game got is extremely bizarre to me. It features completely naked breasts, brutal slaughter of humans, massive amounts of fan service, the removal of the gore didn't change the ESRB rating anyway, and to top it all off, the original Ninja Gaiden Sigma isn't censored. I honestly don't get it at all and I think it was a stupid decision.
