picked up a slew of games/systems at the thrift store. In the lot was a super gameboy and a gameboy player.
Now- i've played a few GBA games on my ds, but virtually no GB games. Growing up while it seems everyone else all over creation was punching away on the gray brick, my brother and i were suck on the atari lynx.
Browsing around for info on it, came up with almost nothing because the gameboy has the same name as the gameboy advance. Google assumes i want that. I know i need to play links awakening (dx version?),the two zelda seasons games, and metroid II. My question is this- what other games are must plays? Heh, the only thing i own is tetris. Which- predictably still holds up.
I know there is a pending gameboy gems section for racketboy. Is that being debated somewhere? Am i voicing what everyone is thinking already?

I'll be sure to look out for ninja gaiden. I love those games even though they are crazy hard.
thanks for the suggestions guys.
After delivering my rent i poked around some video game stores to see whats out there. Here is what i came back with.
super mario land- controls are alittle odd. I want it to play just as smooth as super mario on the nes, but doesn't QUITE get there. It'll take a couple plays to get over that.
tetris attack- love that series
final fantasy legend III- can't go wrong with turn based rpgs, no matter how simple.
wario blast featuring bomberman- haven't gotten it to run yet, just cleaned it.
I also picked up a few gameboy color games, but they don't run in the super gameboy. I am anxiously awaiting my gameboy player for the gamecube now.
metal gear solid - never a fan of metal gear, but I always WANT to be. Trying to push to get into it.
Zelda oracle of seasons
Zelda oracle of ages -do these games link up or share info or something?

Yes, those two Zelda games are like two halves of a single story. I guess the idea is that either could be played first, and the other could follow as a continuation. From what I've heard, you complete one game, get a password from it, then enter it in the second game for its dialog and world to act slightly different as if it were a continuation of the other game. A neat concept, but I never completed either of them to try it out for myself. Oh yeah, and I think there was an additional dungeon and an extra item or two that unlocked in either game depending on which you played as "second". Hope this info helps a bit on that one.
Here are a few other original Gameboy/Gameboy Color games that I recommend. (They also hold up well by todays standards, so that is why I am recommending them.)
-Kirby's Block Ball
A fun spin on games like Breakout or Arkanoid except that you play as Kirby and can inflate the Kirby ball to brak bigger blocks in one bounce. The excitement comes in when you have padels on the floor, ceiling, and both walls, then have to keep yourself in the game breaking blocks. Sounds simplistic, I know, but I can't tell you how many times I've gotten this game out and played it over the years. An all around fun game.
-Dragon Warrior III
I guess they call this series "Dragon Quest" now on the newer releases on current consoles. It was the series original name in Japan, but I always preferred the North American "Dragon Warrior" myself. Anyway, this game is a classic turn based RPG where you create your own party of 4 from a bunch of different classes, and set out to save the world from evil. Not terribly original, but man, it is a whole lot of fun for an RPG this old. The graphics are a big step up from the original NES version of the game, and the user interface is a lot more intuitive as well.
-Final Fantasy Adventure
Although titled as a Final Fantasy game, this is actually the original Seiken Dentetsu game. Its sequel, Seiken Dentetsu II, you may have known by its American title, Secret of Mana on the SNES. I have a lot of fond memories of this game, and it plays a lot like the Gameboy Zelda titles. Definately give it a try if you can find it.
-Super Mario Brothers DX
More than just a mere port of the NES Super Mario Brothers, this cart also had a world map, a gamelink vs. mode, lots of art galleries, mini games, and Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels as an unlockable! When you consider that the Gameboy Advance Super Mario Brothers was nothing but a straight port of the original NES game, you begin to understand why I hold the Gameboy Color version in much higher regard.

just went to the shop and picked up final fantasy adventure on your recommendation LoneCynic. I probably would've passed on it otherwise, but i didn't know it was a secret of mana game. I haven't played secret in a long long time, but i remember loving it. I picked up sword of mana for the GBA, but for some reason it quickly gathered dust.
also grabbed link's adventure dx and metroid II
enjoying the hell out of zelda oracle of seasons.

That's cool that you were able to find a copy of that game man. What did you think of it? Considering that Final Fantasy Adventure came out WAY back when for the original Black and White Gameboy, and looking at it within that context, it is a pretty amazing game. Link's Awakening DX is the Gameboy Color version of that game, and had a few extra features that weren't present in the original GB version. It is also quite an amazing game, with a quite humbling ending from what I recall. I spent a long time on both games when I was a kid. Glad to see someone enjoying these titles.
I haven't played adventure yet. I really only focus on one game at a time, and only until i stop being interested in it. I'm super focused until the game kicks me out. So far its been all seasons for me. I'm in the second dungeon now. Slow work my friend, slow work.
Adventure is definitely on the nintendo deck. I was actually pretty surprised that i could still get original gameboy carts at my local gamestop/eb seeing as they usually don't have anything before gamecube and adventure was made in 91 making it 17 years old.
