It's certainly a welcome option in some situations, but there's no aspect that's forcing them to do so, unlike LCD and Plasma. CRT's don't really has a "native" resolution, at least not in the same sense as the other types. CRTs can actually change resolutions, whereas the other two types are always stuck in just on resolution and must scale everything to that one resolution, because they have physically real pixels which are always set in place, and the image must always adhere to them.
Anyways, I'm falling off topic. You guys were saying something about lightguns?
Which is why they make perfect computer monitors, along with their other obvious plusses in that department. But as for playing light guns, I would really just buy a new huge CRT for that. They may take up space, but they are gorgeous for older games and quite cheap. You can get around a 30" for 250 bucks i think. Thats alot, but for a nice sized TV perfect for older games that will last you almost a decade AND with black friday coming up, its not a bad time to just do it... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... filter.jsp
Bestbuy has plenty of them
I guess this really isn't too nice of me to just say go buy a new tv, but it really does seem the best idea.
Black friday is this friday with Cyber monday being the monday after black friday. Both should get you good deals at the right place.
Firstly sorry for bringing up such an old post; I'm new here and I figured it'd be better if I searched for and posted in a similar topic instead of creating a new one.
Anyways, I've a big fan of light gun games, and am currently facing the same issue here about light guns and the new generation of TVs.
I'm currently using a flat screen CRT (not HD), and even that has rendered my Saturn, PlayStation, and Dreamcast light guns useless.
They're all first party guns (Justifier, GunCon, and the HotD2 one respectively) by the way.
I got this TV a couple of years ago, and was pretty disappointed when I couldn't play all my old light gun games anymore. Only my GunCon 2 on the PS2 still works on it.
I asked around, and was told the cause of this was because of its 100hz refresh rate or something.
So my question is, is that the issue here?
If that's the case, wouldn't getting a new 480i CRT (as metaleggman suggested) these days mean that it'd have that 100hz refresh rate and cause the same problem? (Considering even my 2-3 year old TV already had that specification.)
AFAIK 480i will be capped at 60hz? It's only if you go to Progressive scan mode that it utilises the 100hz refresh. So therefore a TV that is 480p can do 100hz and is back compat to 50hz. However a 480i may not be able to achieve 100hz progressive scan due to the interlaced output.
Before Lik-Sang got shutdown by the company destroying cheap tat at high prices conglomerate known as Sony, they sold a multi-format light-gun that used a sensor bar in the same way that the Wii utilises.
I have no idea if there is anywhere that sell a similar peripheral. Could try Hori? Play-asia may have one, or try ebay. Buying a new gun may be a better solution than buying a new telly.
bumping old topics rather than making new ones....
has anyone found a lightgun that works on hd lcd tvs other than just the wii remote yet? The guncon 2 for the ps2 says that it is lcd playable, but it doesn't register on my set. Might be the anti glare coating?
does anyone have the ps3 guncon? does that work, and does it work on older ps2 games?

This is such a downer. With the direction the market is going i feel like so many great lightgun games are going to be unplayable once the crt tvs die out.
i guess the biggest I'm ever going to cooking fools at is around 26 inches.

I don't have one, but I've tried a PS3 guncon in a store...it works on LCD screens (and any others) because it uses 2 infrared sensors placed on top of the TV...sort of like the Wiimote.
I found the calibration to be WAY off, but I didn't have time to fool around with the options.

I believe the gun Niode was referring to is the "LCD Topgun". It seemed to be a good gun from what I read, although you may have trouble calibrating it. Google for it and check it out (and if you like the extras, such as recoil, and the fact it looks less like a toy). If you get one tell us about it, as I'm thinking about one for myself.
Yes the LCD Topgun. I couldn't remember what it was called at the time. I was tempted to buy one, but never got the chance as Lik-Sang got shut down. (GRR, Fucking Sony!)

Play Asia seems to have them, and probably other stores as well. I'm not getting one until I'm sure there is going to be a Vista driver though.
i was curious if anyone had used the topgun. IGN gave it an ok review. Basically they said the gun doesn't work with time crisis' machine gun game mechanic, but single shot works fine.
has anyone tried hooking up the lightgun with a modded xbox mame game? Like area 51 or something like that? I'm curious if that would work out.
