I have played, and own, and enjoy SCIV. I'm not sure what would make it a pile of trash. It's certainly not the best fighting game I've ever played. But I like it just fine. I think the screens for V look awesome.

I doubt I'll buy ANY of the 3 games I just listed at their initial launch prices though. All three are ones I'm interested in, but can wait for price drops. None are games I'll NEED to play right away.

when I beat it...

Maybe they are good in multiplayer, but I find the SC games to be exceedingly easy, button-mashy, and BORING. I could appreciate SC1 on a technical level and had some fun with SC2 (by far the best in the series). SC3 and SC4 are garbage. (oh, and I tried SC4 online - when I could find people - and the netcode was horrible and made it unplayable).

And the characters suck, so there's that.

Boring, I can't account for. That's personal taste.

Yes, the Arcade Mode is definitely on the easy side. I can't argue that. I guess I forgot that you don't really play fighting games online. I pretty much only play current-gen fighting games online. And really, I tend to think of the single-player mode as practice to prepare for online. So we're coming from way different views.

I also have no idea about horrible netcode. A bunch of us played it for Fightclub a couple weeks ago, and it went on for hours without any online snags to speak of.

I can't speak of other games in the series much. I had played II prior to this, but not for the same length I've played IV. I did just pick up III and Soul Blade recently though in anticipation of Together Retro in February.

As far as characters sucking, again, personal taste. I have my main (Sophitia) that I like a lot. And I have a couple other characters I've enjoyed using as well. But beyond that, SCIV offers you the ability to make your own character as well, which a couple of us (not me) showed off impressively during the fight night.

I think a lot of people find it button mashy, until they really learn the battle system. Sure you can button-mash yr way through single player, but you need to know how to play to win against players that know how to play.

Having said all that -- Soul Calibur is far from my favorite series. But I do find it quite enjoyable. Though I also like fighting games way more than you do. (I'm the guy that's looking forward to Street Fighter X Tekken, to put things into perspective). But having said all that, as far as fighters go, DOA5 is the game I'm looking most forward to this year.

I am lookng forward to SFxT also. I like local multiplayer for fighting games, but can't get into online as much.

sure I'd prefer local multiplayer too. But as far as fighting games are concerned, it's not an option for me. My wife hates them, and you guys all live in other states.

I am going to chime in here.

The original Soul Calibur is one of the best fighting games of all time. That said, local multiplayer is the only way to play the game and appreciate both its depth and accessibility.

When I was in college, the guy across the hall from me purchased a Dreamcast at launch along with a copy of the original Soul Calibur. At first, there was a lot of button mashing - which got us through the single player campaigns without a hitch - and my roommate dominated competitive play as Seung Mina. Even though my roommate dominated, we still enjoyed the game immensely. Nonetheless, the rest of us took some time to study the game's mechanics (especially the parry and reversal mechanics) and learn details of each character's move set. After a few weeks, not only did my roommate's button mashing result in consistent, embarrassing losses (he blamed a "broken controller"), but we enjoyed many incredibly tense matches between highly skilled players. Through this experience, I realized not only the games oceanic depth, but the skill with which Namco crafted it. Anyone can play it and have fun with it (and occassionaly defeat a more skilled opponent), but only those who practice and take the time to learn the game's mechanics will truly appreciate it and be a "good" player.

Soul Calibur II came out when I was in law school, and I did not have anyone to play against; so - while I enjoyed the single player campaign on the hardest setting - I did not enjoy the game as much as the original Soul Calibur. I had a similar experience with Sould Calibur III, and I do not have a system that can play Sould Calibur IV. I would be interested to know, however, whether the games have retained their depth through the years, but - again - I do not have someone to play against locally or - now that I am an employed adult with two small children - the time to really learn the games.
