What are your favorite controller parts?
Re: What are your favorite controller parts?
Total nitpick but can I mention that I don't like the term 'bumpers' terribly much? I am not sure when that word entered gamer parlance - I went to bed one night with everyone calling them shoulder buttons. Woke up and it's like kids league at the bowling alley; bumpers everywhere.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I've never heard them called bumpers until now. Strangeness.Flake wrote:Total nitpick but can I mention that I don't like the term 'bumpers' terribly much? I like the trident shape of the N64 controller. It seems right that the dpad and analog stick each have their own grip.

Note how it says "RB" and "LB", not "LS" and "RS". I'm not sure if the 360 is when the term got put into place, but it certainly made it more popular.

Re: What are your favorite controller parts?
I thought LB and RB stood for left button and right button? I guess bumper makes more sense. Anyways my favorite parts are original xbox d-pad, xbox 360 joysticks and triggers, saturn "bumpers", and snes concave buttons. I'd also have to say my least favorite parts are all the parts of the ps2 and ps3 controllers. I really don't like how they feel so cramped, and in my opinion they feel cheap, especially the joysticks.

Basically how I feel.Flake wrote:The Saturn's 3D controller. It was almost perfect. Comfortable grip. Just the right number of face buttons. I especially loved the analog pad.
And then the Dreamcast controller happened. And the world wondered 'why?'
Though I think I like the face buttons on the M2 pad better for certain games. They're a little less soft.

The DC's ANALOG triggers. Works nicer than you may think in racing games.

Saturn's analog pad's analog triggers are pretty awesome as well. I had forgotten how nice they were actually until I recently got a saturn USB adapter from raphnet that supports all the analog features and started trying out the pad with some modern games!ExedExes wrote:The DC's ANALOG triggers. Turbo Grafx 16: Built in turbo function.
Saturn 3D Pad: Love the the analog thumb stick and removable cable attachment!
Saturn JPN controller: Simply love the the L and R shoulder buttons and controller shape.
Dreamcast: D Pad and VM Slots.

Re: What are your favorite controller parts?
Buttons: SNES. The ABXY cluster is brilliantly designed and I love the concave/convex setup.
D-Pad: Again, the SNES. Perfect size and position.
Control Stick: Dreamcast for sure. Good position, it doesn't double as a button like on PS 2/3 (I hate that shit), and most importantly: THERE IS ONLY ONE OF THEM. Dual analog makes me downright homicidal.
Bumpers: Ummmmmm...... are these shoulder buttons? SNES yet again. Can you tell I like the SNES controller quite a lot?
Triggers: GameCube! That springy sensation is quite pleasurable.
In conclusion, my favorite controllers are SNES, Dreamcast, and GameCube. PC Engine isn't too shabby either, though none of it's "parts" made my list. I've always had a hard time with the Genesis, Saturn, 3DO button layout. Having three action buttons all in a row just doesn't work for me.
