Yeah I agree. I'm sure dsheinem can give us some quick info after he has some time with the Gen conversion. As for me my only PC right now is a laptop running Ubuntu so I'm not sure how easy it will be for me to run MAME. I'll do some research in a bit.mjmjr25 wrote:I haven't researched differences on the diff. roms or actual game carts / arcade boards. We should figure that out and be sure were all on the same settings.

Re: Shmup of the Month Club (TRUXTON) (OP updated 1/1)
is anyone in MAME enabling a rapid fire option in the UI? Would that be kosher?
If so, how would it be done?

Re: Shmup of the Month Club (TRUXTON) (OP updated 1/1)
I agree, things need to be standardized (sets, lives, difficulties, etc.) so nobody's playing an easier or harder game than the rest of us.
That being said -- my observations so far:
- on Arcade/MAME, nothing beats the red gun. It takes out the smaller ships that can be annoying very fast.
- on Genesis, the blue gun is surprisingly effective.
Keep in mind, Genesis version is easier -- not only is there a dedicated rapid-fire button on C, the bomb on that port clears the entire screen, compared to the arcade bomb which is a smaller radius from where your ship was. Also, less enemies/annoying mid-stage ship groups. Plus, difficulty overall is much easier based on settings I'm using.
My settings:
MAME
Difficulty - Medium (default)
Lives - 3 (default)
Extra Lives - 70K/270K/200K+ (default)

Best score, a paltry 83,830 & Area 31. Having trouble with those green mid-level ships that fire straight down when you're underneath them, and regular shots when you are not directly under them. Not liking the total slow/pea shooter checkpoint restarts, but hey, it's the nature of the SHMUP, right?
Genesis (Fusion emu)
Difficulty - Normal (not half as difficult as the arcade)

A better score -- no continues were used either -- 175,700.
Ultimately, it is up to the community on a standard we should all be playing Truxton on, but I feel the defaults are best. I've challenged myself to stop wimping out on difficulty, and I know these scores will be easier to beat with a little pattern practice.

With the cheat.dat file and the F6 key, you can enable in-game cheats. Rapid fire I'm sure would be an option there. I however, am NOT using it. I will do betterdsheinem wrote:is anyone in MAME enabling a rapid fire option in the UI? Would that be kosher?

My stick has a turbo option - but it only works on the default weapon, it makes the green/blue guns shoot about 1/2" on screen, then reload (looks like a stun gun) - thus, useless. So, it looks like a real button masher.
I'm playing on shmupmame btw.
We should lay out the entire schedule for the year now though - to enable us to acquire physical console or arcade copies - this mame is a pain in the balls. Twice i've had good runs freeze up on me :/

How does the Genesis port compare when it's on hard?ExedExes wrote:Genesis (Fusion emu)

Check the OP, we have a voting system going on. Hopefully everything will be set in stone before Feb.mjmjr25 wrote:We should lay out the entire schedule for the year now though - to enable us to acquire physical console or arcade copies - this mame is a pain in the balls. I thought the GEN version bomb was more effective. This bomb on shmupmame is worthless, lasts about literally 1 second and clears just a small areas around you. Not much respite.ExedExes wrote: Keep in mind, Genesis version is easier -- not only is there a dedicated rapid-fire button on C, the bomb on that port clears the entire screen, compared to the arcade bomb which is a smaller radius from where your ship was.
