So that this doesn't turn into a one-word spam topic, I decided against "What is your favorite controller", but what are your favorite controller parts? For example, here's mine:
Buttons: American SNES X/Y buttons. Why don't more controllers have indents in their buttons?
D-Pad: Dreamcast's, assuming you're willing to replace your controller. It wears out pretty easily, but it's small enough to quickly change directions and raised enough so that you're not pressing down on the rest of the controller when pressing it in a direction (which irks me for some reason).
Control stick (includes circle pads or anything else used for 3D movement): 360's. Like the SNES X/Y buttons, I love the indent.
Bumpers: Original DS ones. Nice and bulky, yet they take little effort to press down on. They seem to wear out, unfortunately, but until then, they feel brilliant.
Triggers: Never really felt any that made me go "wow", but I guess the GC's ones; they're pretty easy to feel whether you're halfway down or not on.

* SNES: D-Pad & yeah, I liked the concave button tops too --made it easy to differentiate AB/XY without looking down.
* TurboGrafx: Built-in turbo (and plenty of software that made good use of it).
* GameCube: Super smooth analog joysticks that made us realize how bad the N64's were.
* Neo Geo AES: Great clicky joystick that almost made up for the horrendous buttons.
* N64: Odd, unique and strangely comfortable controller "trident" design.
* Wii: Pointing at the screen to shoot not-zombies in RE4 made the game worth buying (again).

The N64 has a rather awesome D-Pad actually. It's a shame it doesn't get much use, because it's really comfy.

Pretty sure the perfect controller would have the snes d-pad, with sega genesis face buttons.

It would be nice if N64 and Xbox could trade D-pads.AppleQueso wrote:The N64 has a rather awesome D-Pad actually. It's a shame it doesn't get much use, because it's really comfy.

Re: What are your favorite controller parts?
Nintendo has it locked with their d-pad design, all of their controllers have a nice one except the GC, which featured a GBA d-pad much too small IMO.
For joysticks I would have said the 360 untill I got my hands on a 3ds, that circle pad feels amazing.
I always loved the Dreamcast triggers, does anyone else hate the "triggers" on the ps3 controller, I always slip off of them!

The Saturn's 3D controller. It was almost perfect. Comfortable grip. Just the right number of face buttons. I especially loved the analog pad.
And then the Dreamcast controller happened. And the world wondered 'why?'

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
Re: What are your favorite controller parts?
I have to use the ps3 trigger attachments because of the slip. I really like everything else about the DS3, but the triggers feel shoehorned in.jay_red wrote:Nintendo has it locked with their d-pad design, all of their controllers have a nice one except the GC, which featured a GBA d-pad much too small IMO.

Buttons: PS1/2/3. Perfectly flat buttons on a perfectly flat surface for your thumb to work on. They are also sized perfectly, spaced perfectly, and have exactly the right amount of tactile feedback. You won't push them by mistake (like DS buttons) or not push hard enough (like GameCube bumpers).
D-Pad - I find the PS D-Pad to be most comfortable, but the most accurate and usable pad for action games is on the Mad Catz Street Fighter IV Fightpad.
Bumpers: Original GBA. Easy to reach and easy to push.
Analog sticks: PS2. They seem to be a lot more durable than other controllers. Good resistance, easy grip and pretty precise.
Triggers: I hate triggers.
