Thoughts on a year spent collecting PS 1 and 2

Post by vic oakland »

I'm on the older-side of gamers and don't really fit into a conventional retro console profile since most of my time gaming prior to 2000 was spent:

-on Mattel football hand helds
-on a Fairchild F
-on a Vic 20, including typing in the code for games from magazines
-and in arcades in two bursts, once as a junior high kid in the "classic" era of PacMan, Tron, Centipede, Berzerk, Robotron, Tempest and Defender, and a second burst around college during the 720 Degrees, Gauntlet, and Smash TV era...

ie. I missed 20 years, or so, of gaming.

I bought a PS1 very late (after the PS2 was already out) and, in addition to getting my retro fix with the compilations, really enjoyed games like Tony Hawk, Colin McRae and Deception.

When I eventually purchased a PS2 I steadily bought and played a few games like Maximo, Ico, Virtua Fighter 4, SSX, Baldur's Gate and would, from time to time, swoop up some cool games for PS1 for cheap as the stores closed them out (JoJo's, SFA3, FF Tactics etc).

I'd also get the game magazines with the demo discs, and to be honest, whether for PS1 or 2 most games looked and played better than my decidely ancient old-school gaming expectations. I also liked that a PS2 slim didn't really take up much space.

Sometime a few years ago, after stopping in a GameStop to buy a controller and, seeing so many previously expensive PS2 games for cheap, it occured to me that you could make a pretty good collection of the history of video games with a PS2. I didn't do anything about it other than purchase a couple games (Shadow of the Colossus, Bully) that I'd been curious about.

Then I found this website and Racketboy's list of hidden gems for the PS1 and PS2 and suddenly I had games like SkyGunner, Ring of Red, Growlanser and Samurai Shodown Anthology on a list. It wasn't long before I started to hunt down PS1 games like Heart of Darkness, Einhander and Strider 2, as well.

To make this long meandering story short, last year I finally bought a 27" Wega SD for $60 and hooked up some component cables to my PS2 and started collecting in earnest. I'm glad I did.

In my lowly, old-school opinion, this has to be some kind of golden-era for collecting games that can play on a PS2 and look great on a standard TV.

While the Sony library by itself isn't always perfect, and the stock of working SD TVs and PS2 slims will someday dwindle to nothing, I can't tell you how many times I've been surprised at just how crisp some of these old games are, how interesting the gameplay is and how much value for the dollar you get as a collector. Taito Legends 2 for $8? Tail Concerto for $6? Raiden Project for $10?

It's pretty sick, really.

Also, to bring this all home, as someone who pretty much MISSED the entire history of consoles, (Vic 20 to....PS1!) I can't tell you how fun it is to blindly purchase an older game after reading a couple reviews and then discover an era of gaming as if it were new.

The other day, for example, I put in Wild ARMs for the first time. Lol. I had no idea.

It's like instant nostalgia...but nostalgia for an era of gaming I never even participated in to begin with.

Which in a round about way, is my whole point.

So, in gratitude for lots of good info and advice, much thanks to Racketboy, the site authors and moderators and the folks on these forums! 8)

Well, I'm a high school kid. I started playing around PS2, although some of my neighbors had N64 before me. I did have a GBA when I was little, but my mom picked out all the games for me which gave me the impression that video games were stupid. I mean, the ones I had really were. I did eventually get some great PS2 stuff like Sly Cooper and Star Wars: Battlefront, but the entire history of gaming before then was lost to me.

All changed when I got a NES at some garage sale and instantly started collecting from there. I think NES is old-school enough for me; I'm not really interested in Atari. But those three generations I missed are goldmines :)

I love stories like this. Awesome to hear RB has been able to open your eyes to all the great gaming that's been right under your nose.

PS1 is pretty much my pre-teen childhood, I absolutely love the system and it's library. Between PS1 and PS2, you've got an absolutely massive selection of great games. Hope you enjoy all of your gaming time to the fullest.

I very much appreciate your comments and, as a GenX'er also appreciate how my gen got to see things from the very beginning. We're easy to please.

Speaking for myself, I don't really miss Atari, Vic-20, Fairchild at all...definitely not enough to collect them. We played the hell out of those games and the good stuff really did come later. (Silent Bomber, for example!)

I do miss the arcades. They had a dark Blade Runner quality sometimes. You just didn't know what would come next.

One memory stands out for me linking the above. Going to see Tron in 1982 and playing the Tron arcade game in the movie theater lobby. I remember realizing that computers were becoming more and more a part of our lives and that games would only become more immersive, like movies. (In reality, aside from the great bike levels and the cabinet design, that game wasn't all that good!)

For current retro gamers what we have at our fingertips...so many generations of games to collect...is almost like a different version of the richness of what it felt like at the arcades. Only now there are faqs, forums, online play, youtube, ebay, podcasts, emulators...and communities like this one.

In that respect...the virtual subculture...there are aspects of retro gaming that do kind of feel like something imagined by William Gibson.

I also just recently found out about "retro" collecting, and picked up my first ever Playstation 2 to play the PS1 and 2 games. I had a roomie in college with PS1 and it was great, but man, what a deal the PS2 is!! Wonderful library of games, reasonably priced, with the added bonus of the whole PS1 library!

(It beats the pants off of Nintendo in many ways-- not that I am hating on them, 'cuz I collect their stuff too!)

I was a late comer to the NES so I can see what everyone means in discovering an old console.

The PS2 has a phenomenal library, games in any genre and a HUGE selection of controllers you can try. Adaptors such as a SmartJoy Frag that allow a PS/2 mouse on any analog stick game or the multitude of Arcade, Driving or Flight Controllers; the world is your oyster!

For recent PS2 owners, something to really make you smile. Look into getting a Fat for installing games to an internal IDE Hard Drive. Put the discs away after install and enjoy menu driven fast loading convenience.

great story! I've collected PS1 and PS2 on-and-off since launch. And what's awesome is, even now I'm constantly learning about new games that I had no idea about. They are two of the most vast and impressive libraries out there.

I kind of had the same realization when I found a Dreamcast for $5 and picked up a few games for cheap, but that was fairly late last year! I only have a handful of games but it was insane how fairly easy and cheap they were to find (Grandia II for $2 at a thrift store!) and how I managed to build a solid collection in less than 10 games.

House of the Dead 2
Sonic Adventure
Grandia II
Phantasy Star Online ver. 2
Skies of Arcadia
Soul Calibur
Jet Grind Radio

I swear the years from about 1996-2004 were some of the best in gaming, and the Dreamcast fell right in the middle of it.

That said my largest collection is still my PS2 collection. I recommend Okami, horribly underrated, incredibly beautiful (watercolor painting style graphics), a wonderful setting and story based on Japanese history and mythology, unique combat and controls with Zelda style puzzle solving. Truly a must have!

I agree. I think the PS1 and early PS2-era were just mindblowing as far as variety and quality went. And you just reminded me -- Okami! How have I continually forgotten to play this game??? Thanks!
