DVDs to Blu Ray

Post by christopher85 »

Are there any movies on dvd that actually look just as good or a little better than bluray? I know this is might possibly be a very stupid question

For example: I bought Tron (80's) on dvd, inserted it into my 360 and man did it look beautiful. I couldn't believe that I was watching a regular ol' dvd. I was blown away.

I do have an hd tv hooked up with hdmi and all that jazz maybe thats why?

Maybe it's just me

What do you guys think?

The anniversary DVD of Tron is anamorphic and dual layer. Anamorphic DVDs can look very good on an HD TV as long as care was taken to author them properly. Cheap early single layer DVDs that were just slapped together or made from a poor film master can look like crap.

I still cant believe some people dont realize a blu-ray player can play their giant DVD collection, as i found it during this holiday season since i work in retail.

Also it seems chick flicks/family movies tend to sell out more on DVD than blu-ray....

BluRay can really show off its capability if you have a HUGE screen. On my 32" HDTV a 480p Anamorphic DVD image is sharp and clear. Even DVD upscalers will not compete with BluRay but only if displayed on say on a 50" screen.

It all depends on the master, the encoding, and the hardware...but although I mostly watch animated stuff, HD pretty much always looks better. It's pretty hard to encode a bad video on a Blu-Ray. There's 25-50GB to waste on just one movie!

Anamorphic you say? I have to learn more about it. What are some movies that use this format?

I'm sure there's a list of anamorphically encoded DVDs on a video forum somewhere. I'm pretty sure I've seen lists of "best/worst authored DVDs" too that talk about ones that look great versus ones that are terrible.

I can tell you the worst I have though. Wings of Honneamise DVD actually looks worse than the VHS due to all of the edge enhancement that gives halos to everything. And yes, I own both, so I'm not just going off things I've read. :(

Always wanted to see that. What is the definitive version to get anyway?

Presumably the 2007 release is fine. Just don't get the 2000 Manga DVD. That's the one that's crap. Excellent movie though.
