Text Adventure and Point and Click games

Post by jvalentine98 »

I'm not a big fan of action games, Mario games, Zelda type games, etc. I've always been more interested in games that made me think. I got my first PC back in 1997 and I was able to play Myst, and its sequel Riven, on it. But years earlier I had come across a game called Uninvited at my cousin's house. She had it on the NES. I loved that game and even though it's seriously dated now, I make it a point to play through the game at least once per year.

I started looking for other games such as the 7th Quest, the 11th Hour and Alone in the Dark, which eventually led me to Resident Evil and I was hooked. You can trace the survival horror elements of Resident Evil and Silent Hill all the way back to Uninvited. For example Resident Evil uses a verb palette that's very similar and forces the player to search each room for clues. They also both take place in a creepy mansion. Silent Hill practically stole the intro story right out from under Uninvited. It's the same set up except in Silent Hill you're searching a town for you lost daughter vs searching a mansion for your lost sister/brother.

So all that said, I'm interested in going back even further to the text adventure games that came before the point and click genre. If anyone of you have any suggestions I'd like to hear them. (Or if there are any other point and click games you know of that are worth checking out.)
They have escaped into the mansion where they thought it was safe, yet.

Have you ever played Zork? If you've never tried it, you should definitely give it a go. It's a classic of the Text Adventure genre.

I'll have to check that one out. I've played some of the obvious ones like the Monkey Island games, loved the first couple of them back in the day. Though those are more point and click but I guess they can be summed up as graphic fiction or something.

Hm.

Eternal Darkness (GC) -- A bit more combat intensive than Resident Evil, but it's easier.

Sweet Home (NES)(J) -- Fan-translated, pre-Resident Evil game; turn-based RPG!

And have you tried the light PnC stuff that LucasArts has: Monkey Island & Indiana Jones?
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

Yeah I mentioned Monkey Island...Eternal Darkness was good but I pretty much conquered that one 8/9 years ago. good game, though.

Oh, and I know ALL about Sweet Home. No self described Resident Evil aficionado would be righteous if they didn't know that game, it is from Capcom after all.

1+ Judging from from the OP, you'll definitely enjoy Clock Tower seeing as it's a pusdo point-and-click adventure game with action-adventure and survival-horror elements mixed in.
