Can I use a PS1 controller on PS2 to play 2D PS2 games?

Does anyone know if you can use an original PS1 controller to on a PS2 to play PS2 games that accept digital input? I want to use a digital PS1 controller to play games like Megaman X Collection, Street Fighter Alpha Anthology and shooters like Thunder Force VI and Gradius V.

I don't have a PS1 controller like this to test, and so before I go and buy one I want to ensure I can actually use it for what I'm planning.

Some games (like Silent Hill 2 for instance) cannot be played without a DualShock 2 in the controller port. It won't accept the original PSX controller as a proper input device.

It really depends on the game, though.

No no, I obviously know I can't play games like Silent Hill that require movement with the analog sticks. What I'm asking about are games like Taito Legends, Megaman X Collection, Gradius V, Street Fight Alpha Anthology, Melty Blood, etc. Can I use an original PS1 digital controller on a PS2 to play those games?

I have a PS1 controller like that but I think the PS2 controller is a lot more comfortable. The middle section is really skinny so holding the controller and supporting it from the middle, like I usually do, is actually pretty awkward. A PS2 pad is just as good as PS1, though. Why get a new one in the first place?

On a related note, PS1 arcade sticks will almost always work the PS2 arcade-style games since most of them accept digital input.

Ah didn't think to check the backs. Yes, all the games that I want to use a digital controller have the box except for Megaman Anniversary Collection and Megaman X Collection.

Can anyone confirm if these two games work in digital mode with a PS1 controller? I don't see why they wouldn't work but I want to confirm.
