Should I start worrying?

Post by Cruz »

Hey hey guys,

First of all, I'm new here. Two week ago I got myself a Dreamcast, bought Shenmue 1 + 2 a couple days later aswell and goddamn, the last two discs of Shenmue 2 are frickin' awesome!

The reason why I'm a bit worried is because when I was playing After Burner II, too add it to my collection and I left the machine my TV screen suddenly went nuts and displayed a black screen with weird green/blue/red colors, my Dreamcast was still working and sound and buttons were responding fine, I turned Dreamcast off and on again and the problem was gone, when I tried After Burner II again everything went allright gladly.

My Shenmue discs are pretty much in new condition, not a single scratch or anything, I've been using my TV for 14 years now and I never got such a thing on any console. Just made me think, maybe there's something wrong with my Dreamcast as it seems to have quite some errors.

My experience regarding hardware, I can build my own computer and that's it. :)

I'd aprecciate if anyone could help out, Maybe I just worry too much but I can't help too think there's anything wrong when I hear the disc reader going mental inside, especially when playing Shenmue :D

hi cruz.

welcome to racketboy.

does your tv only have one port for av cables?

maybe the pulling and unpulling of cables have finally messed up your tv?

Some cables are tighter than others and when you pull on the yellow/red/white cables, eventually the tv may wear out.

Also check the dreamcast and jiggle the cable. Sometimes there's screen flicker when this happens.

I had a busted xbox av cable once and just barely even touching it made the screen funky. I bought another cable and no problems since.

Its nothing too much to worry about. just replace.

While my av port is abit loose I guess, it never happened before. And ofcourse I made sure it was properly plugged in when the problem occured before turning my Dreamcast off. :P

Guess I should just deal with it for now and see if it happens again, I haven't put enough time playing the Dreamcast to make a proper judgement I guess.

Hey!

First of all, good to see a fellow Shenmue fan! I won the PAL copy of Shenmue 2 off Ebay last week -- still waiting for it to get here -- ITCHING to play more of it! Hoping the quest for Lan Di will continue just as good as the first set did

And yes, will be playing AF2 and Outrun !!!!!!!

If that issue only happened once, I would write it off as just that. As the previous poster stated, make sure your connection cable is free of defects and make sure both ends are tightly connected -- I had an issue with no video last week and the back cable connection to DC was a bit loose.

No spoilers please! Hopefully getting mine TOMORROW

The Dreamcast GDRom Drive is loud by nature, nothing you can do other than download optimized backups that people like Tuxthewise make that cuts down on reader noise, and in the case of half-Life, cut the loading times down to 15 seconds per map as opposed to 30 seconds originally.

They use custom folder order and put the most demanding data on the outside of the disc's so the Dreamcast actually reads many backups better than the original retail discs's.
