Any knowledgeable PC/DOS collectors here?

Hey all,

I picked up a copy of Rise of the Robots: The Director's Cut for MS DOS a few months ago. Though sadly incomplete because it's missing the sleeve, I couldn't really complain for the 5 bucks I paid for it. I was wondering if this edition is either extremely rare because I can't find any for sale on eBay or other websites for the life of me, or if that's just to the extremely fragmented nature of DOS games because there were so many different ones that didn't sell too well?

Nice find, first off! Good price!

I had no idea that game came out on PC. All I remember is the critical and universal disdain it received on every console it came out on. It was a part of that early-to-mid 90s trend of amazing graphics but horrible gameplay sells better. Even the 3DO version wasn't all that impressive.

I am sure the game receiving a DOS port on CD, it probably has a little better in the way of graphics and gameplay. Rarity wise, unless it came out around the same time as the console ports, I would not have expected it to be. However, if the DOS port came out later, it could have been in more of a limited quantity due to poor console sales.

I have Rise of the Robots Single Disc, didn't know about the Two Disc version. Maybe rare since Rise of the robots is now an obscure title. In honesty a crappy game with fluff but lousy gameplay. I also have the Epic Games One Must Fall 2097, a much better title for a DOS Robot Fighter. Its not as pretty and only in VGA, but the action is spot on. Interesting that the human fighters got revamped into Robots.

Good times with OMF. One of the few games I did dialup online multiplayer on my slow ass PC So glad it's freeware now

Yeah, I know the game is crap but then again, most rare games are rare for a reason :p It really is a dire game especially for having been touted as a Street Fighter killer. If I'm not mistaken every single version had a blatant lie on the cover for supposedly having music by Brian May. I think only the CD-i version had parts of that score.

I think the PC version officially counts as the worst of all versions because it supposedly didn't have any in-game music whatsoever. I'll have to test the extra disc some time to find out what's on it regarding the making-of process. And of course the game itself to see if any changes were made to the standard PC edition, maybe it's like what they did to ClayFighter: Sculptor's Cut

According to Wiki:

Although the game boasted original soundtrack music by Brian May (guitarist of Queen), only a short intro from The Dark appeared in the final release, while the actual in-game score was done by Mirage (in the case of the PC version, there was no in-game music at all). While May did in fact record a full soundtrack to the game, his record company EMI requested numerous delays, which consequently prompted Mirage to proceed without the music rather than having to reschedule the release date.

One thing I've discovered about old DOS games is that they can be simultaneously rare and worthless.
