Not true! I definitely beat him without resorting to that.

From what I remember, you just need to race him in that area where the road gets divided by the bridge supports. It may take a few tries, but he will slam right into the center support eventually, which should give you the break you need to beat him.

I'm surprised more people don't love this series. The best was 3, but I haven't put any effort into XGRA.

Battle Gear 2 comes up often in these conversations and I guess that means I need to give it a whirl. From what I have read it seems to be a step between Daytona USA and Gran Turismo, which sounds perfect to me.

Trackmania Nations Forever is free and it's an excellent racing game. You can get it for Steam here:

Now that this thread has been necromanced, here's another amazing (and free) PC racer:

Daytona USA (Arcade/Dreamcast)
Beetle Adventure Racing
OutRun (Arcade)
Diddy Kong Racing
Monaco GP
Hang On (Arcade)
Virtual Racing (32X)

Hang-On and OutRun are two of my favorites. I think they've aged particularly well.

Sega Rally is still tits. Sliding around corners in all of its 32bit awesomeness never gets old. Plus it still looks pretty good considering its age.

F-Zero on the 64 is another good one. Still looks fantastic!

The first WiPEOUT is still very playable with a great soundtrack but I could just be biased since Its by far my fav racing game of all time.

Road Rash 2 is still a blast to play. Having just played it last month tho I can say that it doesn't look as pretty as I remember it being.
