I think "Mario Strikers Charged" definitely fits your criteria.
Multiplayer, cartoony, fun and very affordable being an "older" Wii game.
I've seen recent auctions ending for $10/$15 shipped!
[Edit] Around $25 to buy it new.

I just found out my new Wii can't play anything GC. Though I am bummed maybe I'll just pick one up since they aren't expensive anymore.

1. My girlfriend wants to play along with me
* Mario Galaxy 2 has a great 'sidekick' mode where player 2 can stun enemies, collect and hold items for Mario. My gf loves playing this with me.

2. Platformers are ok especially cartoony looking ones
* Buy all: Kirby Return to Dreamland, Donkey Kong Country Returns, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Kirby's Epic Yarn. Consider Rayman Origins and Warioland Shake.

3. Is there any fun games that really make use out of the Wii controller?
* Wii Sports Resort, Zelda Skyward Sword, Just Dance

RETURN IT
The new Wii's also do not support Gamecube Controllers for Wii games!

Certain Wii games use all these:

Even worse, from what I understand they removed GC compatibility altogether. :(
This was the so-named "Family Edition". I second the "Return It" motion!

All Horizontal Gamecubes do not support Gamecube games and controllers. For any easier to find later on reference, I expanded on Wii Gamecube compatibility issues in the OP of my Wii Gamecube Thread.

Thank you for putting that together. It's amazing what can change seemingly overnight with hardware. If Nintendo ever decides to silently add nice features to a revision, I'm really going to be lost. :P

BTW Regarding the $4.99 GCN component cables, I actually found one in store a few years back. Fortunately I also bought it and have been living happily ever after (a bit of an exaggeration, but a great find nonetheless). :)

I can't take it back since it was a gift to me from my girlfriend. I'm sure she had no idea nor did I.

On the up-side, all the recommended games still stand. :)
To add another, I personally liked Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (though the controls are admittedly... challenging).

If I were you I'd just get a 'cube. They probably don't cost much these days and they're worth having in my opinion for a gba player at least. Playing gamecube games on the wii is sort of a pain anyway. You have to use the wii remote to get to the game, then you use the gamecube controller to play. And when you're done, assuming you want to switch games or something you have to get the wii remote again, wait for it to connect to the wii and go back to the menu. Not like it's difficult or anything but I'm used to the whole "plug in a controller and go" thing, I guess.
