This is the SONY KV-34HS420. I am just curious if anyone here owns this TV or knows anything about its reliability. Is it worth 360 dollars that the buyer is asking for??? I can either buy this or a PS3 to play MGS4. I need a good TV for my retro and next gen gamings and I heard this is the best of both world as it is a CRT HDTV. Thanx.
it can go up to 720p and 1080i. it has both component and hdmi input. the reason I want a CRT tv is because I don't like the pixelated pictures for all my retrogaming on the newer LCDs.
I have a older Samsung HDTV CRT and all my composite and s-video games look like ass. Dunno if it's my TV or the fact the HDTV has to display HD, so it line doubles/filters/whatever everything up to HD. Maybe my scalers suck. I do have a SD Sony CRT that looks great for the older, non-component stuff. 16x9 does not help old school gaming at all.
I have a buddy with the same (or close enough) model TV. He would give it to me for free, if I hauled it away from his apt in California (I live in NC) after he got a LCD. Never took him up on the offer for obvous reasons(even after he added a car to the deal...a car that could not fit the tv mind you). This bitch is HEAVY! I try to use the rule, "don't own what you can't carry".
Sony makes good looking, good performing TVs. Their repair history (according to Consumer Reports) isn't the best, but it isn't the worst, either. Sony has a history of making great looking, sounding, performing products that break way too soon :)
I've had a Sony 27 inch Wega going on... wow, 7 years now. I love it. I'm not getting an HDTV till this one is dead.
Don't give in to the hype and mega-consumer attitude that you need an HDTV to enjoy television.
That said, this one looks good. I would google some reviews and try to get the price down a bit, depending on the age. Also, these are a bitch to move, so I would only get it if I were going to be in the same place for a few years at least.
Beware this set highest native resolution is 720p. For some reason this specific model upscales to 1080i? Most Sony CRT's are 1080i so this is an exception.
That said if you consider the price and size its probably good for you. Unless your display is over 50" or so resolutions over 720p are not visible to the human eye. CRT color and contrast are still superior to almost any format of flat screen HDTV. Also scaling up to 1080i isn't the best thing ever, but this set doesn't scale old material in 480i or 480p up like LCD's. Its all just nitpicking but often scaling of signals is what makes retro games look bad on LCD and Plasma.
The only negatives would be if you have devices that are 1080i or 1080p. They won't be displayed at full resolution. Considering the display is only 34" this really doesn't matter that much.
Thanx for all your advices. I really do like the TV but the price is a bit high. The seller won't budge on the price so I've decided not to buy it. I am still looking for one and hoping to buy one at 250-300 dollar range. If I don't find a deal by June 12, then MGS4 will have a home to play on.
Anyway if anyone is interested in buying a PS3 with BC like me but can't find a 60 GB, then may I recommend you waiting until June 12 as I heard Wal-Mart is offering a $100 gift card with purchase of the 80GB PS3 MGS4 Bundle. Here's the website that I read it from.
